I would say that was pretty weird, but then I have no idea how many people go missing in western countries.

From personal experience I only know of one person that disappeared for some years as a young man, and we randomly bumped into each other a decade later in a pub. 

He told me he didn't want to be around his family anymore, and that was that.

One of the people in the video you linked gave the excuse that a company he took over went bust, but I don't know, can shame alone cause him to abandon those close to him?  I'd bet there was more to the situation than that.
