I recall Asanoyama being relatively injury-free before his suspension. You'd think the time off would have enabled him to fully rehab any lingering issues and work on his strength, so I didn't expect him to fall apart like this after coming back. I wonder if it's age, bad luck, or some effect of the layoff...

I still think he was cursed by a special trophy from a special person...

True.  A Yusho at M8 in May 2019 and hardly heard from again.

At this point they might just mummify Tsushimanada and send him to the dohyo.

He looked lively enough looping that right fist at Nabatame’s jaw on Day 4. Looked particularly vicious and appeared to be a punch, to my eyes, not a slap. Bad blood there? Certainly rang his bell while picking up his first win. Maybe he reads the forum…

Speaking of KO blows, Kaiseijo had Wakamiyabi sleeping for a bit there.

It hasn't been a good basho for brain health.

Poor Kazekeno was looking good for a juryo return - sadly, it looks like his knee buckled suddenly during today's bout, and he limped all the way to the back.

Does anyone know if there was a fight in the shitakubeya? Oho and Kinbozan looked mighty pissed off with each other.

I thought Mitakeumi's shitatenage win over Kotozakura was outstanding. He was determined not to touch down first. I haven't seen that sort of tenacity from him for ages, maybe ever.

Flawless first third from the yokozuna. He's got that unofficial 'dai-' prefix in his sights.

Assuming all intra-sanyaku bouts take place then Kirishima needs to beat three Sanyaku, one of which will have to be ranked above Sekiwake. Takakeisho would need to beat four Sanyaku, but none of them at the moment have to be higher than Sekiwake.

Rouga handled Takarafuji on a pretty much equal basis and is doing well to slowly start being competitive in makuuchi moving forward, not just backwards. Sure Takarafuji is not the most difficult test but a good win anyway.

I was holding my breath at the end of Hokutofuji's bout, afraid that he might bellyflop at the last minute. However he managed a decent win against Kagayaki and makuuchi is not lost to him yet.

Wakatakakage continues his march over the bodies of lower makuuchi. Tremble sanyaku, he's coming for you! But seriously, he is one of the best looking maegashira this basho, even if the level of competition makes it easy for him.

We got Shodai A for the second day in a row! Though he was met by an imposter in a Nishikigi bodysuit while the real Nishikigi is seemingly enjoying a summer vacation on the beach.

Tamawashi just casually brushed Ichiyamamoto aside without even raising one eyebrow. Easy win for the oldie but goodie.

Oho got seriously worked up at Kinbozan and channeled all that anger into aggressive pushing sumo. That worked out well for him though even after watching the replay I'm not sure what triggered him.

Big man Shonannoumi is also quietly racking up the wins, about to sneak in a similar performance as last basho where he briefly featured in the yusho run. He's done very calm and confident sumo these days, handling Sadanoumi with ease today.

Abi's winning move looked quite unusual, grabbing Atamifuji by the mawashi, dragging him backwards and dropping him on his back. I doubt that was Abi's plan but at this point every win counts for him so he'll be pleased with that improvisation.

Onosato seemed relived after winning his bout with Kirishima, finally getting another win. Despite Kirishima's efforts he was surprisingly ineffective against Onosato's power which leads me to believe he might be improved compared to the last two basho, but not quite in his best shape yet.

Kotozakura way too careful today against Mitakeumi who hasn't exactly screamed sumo competence after the first day. Kotozakura's throw at the end was a good attempt to escape from a pushout but Mitakeumi has enough experience to tilt the balance to his own favour. In other words, Kotozakura was his own undoing today.

Takakeisho actually looked decent in his bout with Ura, though that was at least partly due to Ura being lenient on the ozeki and facing him head on.

Hoshoryu felt the need for a strong win to reassert his ozeki dominance after a so-so start to the basho. So the match with Wakamotoharu who has a strong losing record against the ozeki came exactly at the right time. He basically yanked Wakamotoharu out in a pretty one-sided bout. After a good start Wakamotoharu hasn't looked stellar and now has to work hard even for a simple kachikoshi.

Is this Terunofuji's last push for a yusho? He's been dominant this basho but somehow I have the feeling he won't be able to repeat this kind of performance again. But then again it wouldn't be my first time to be totally wrong.

That special person barely escaped a certain death days ago and will return. Hope Asa will overcome yesterday's incident and show us a strong return too.

That Meisei-Tobizaru match was the sumo version of Groundhog Day, 20 seconds of the same thing happening over and over.

I equate that style of "sumo" to fencing. I wouldn't have minded the gyoji stopping both guys mid-bout to do the flight attendant nonsense with his arms and blurt out a tirade in french to award one of them a touché. I'm expecting, at the foil olympics, a hungarian guy trying to grab his rival by the waist and escorting him out of the strip thus being awarded the win by the ancient technique of jorée-curé.

That also assumes Kirishima wins all the remaining non-Sanyaku matches which is not a given... Meisei, Atamifuji, Wakamotoharu, and especially Tobizaru who he have a negative record against are not exactly easy matches.

Yes. That assumption was given as the easiest path by rank.

A 3-2 start is rough for a Sekiwake looking to get to 10 wins.

Osanai Onojo had both rikishi down with only one paramedic at the dohyo - a 2nd arrived later

Edit: looks like the end of career for Osanai, if not worse

Looks very bad. Osanai wheeled away on a gurney. Looks like a head or neck injury.

The shimpan had enough of Miyagi's fake tachi-ai - he lost on the 2nd try. Looks like not only the tachi-ai, he mimics the eagle dance of Mongolian sumo as his preparation on the dohyo.

Another injury- Fujitoushi is crouching for a few minutes now dohyo-side after losing, a wheelchair is brought. Someone throw more salt on the dohyo, please..

Posted (edited)

After the 2 left with Osanai, apparently there is no paramedic now at the doyho, the shimpan looked confused about what to do with Fujitoshi - out with the wheelchair
