Seki-Toto (play):

The makuuchi division came in with a mean score of over 8 wins in January, even higher than the dreadful last two editions, but thankfully the zone of dominance was limited to the absolute top of the banzuke this time - the nine players ranked yokozuna to sekiwake averaged bang-on 10 (!) wins with all KKs. The other 33 players produced a much more palatable 7.6 wins and a 17 KK / 16 MK split, so the new rankings came together very easily for a change.

An update to the topic of new ozeki demotion rules that I brought up two months ago: After recognizing some conceptual problems with the idea I had outlined (e.g. 8-7, 8-7, MK would be a demotion, 8-7, MK, 8-7 would not be...), I've opted for a simpler solution:

Makekoshi = full demerit, 8-7 = half demerit, collecting two demerits in any form (including four straight 8-7's) = demotion.

If you have demerits tallied, any record of 9-6 or better will eliminate one point; if you were at 1.5, you'll still have 0.5 to clean up afterwards. In other words: 8-7, MK, 12-3, MK, 8-7 = demotion. That's four below-average records in five, so I consider it reasonable. For the avoidance of doubt, if you manage to get demoted with the maximum possible 2.5 demerits (as opposed to a "normal" 2-point demotion) and you come back up immediately, you'll start your new ozeki stint with 0.5, too.

Additional rule change Hatsu 2025: A demoted ozeki who returns to the rank immediately will retain 0.5 demerits for his new stint if the return was earned with a 10-5 score. 11-4 and better will result in a completely clean slate. This starting point determination is made independent of any possible "excess" 0.5 demerits from the demotion itself (as described in the preceding paragraph), which will be added on top if applicable.

This accounting will be waived if the makuuchi scores happen to go so high in a basho that the full scoring adjustment kicks in. Ozeki records of 9-6 -> 8-7 will be treated as a proper kachikoshi (and clear a demerit if applicable), while 8-7 -> 7-8 will net a full demerit.

As I had announced my intention to introduce changes before Hatsu basho, the new rule is applicable to the results of that tournament and thus in effect with this new banzuke, which means that Ganzohnesushi is now at 0.5 demerits.

I'm still mulling over how to exactly set the yokozuna intai guidelines now, but the general principle of counting 8-7's as equivalent to half a makekoshi will apply there, too.

Edit: The corresponding yokozuna guidelines were announced for Nagoya 2024.

Seki-Oracle (play):

A tournament with a very competitive lower makuuchi led to larger than usual demotions for those who went MK in the joi.

Andoreasu moves up to ozeki based on this run:

2023.07 M4w 12-3 (3rd-5th place)
2023.09 K1e 9-6 (4th-7th place)
2023.11 S2e 8-7 (11th-14th place)
2024.01 S1w 12-3 J (2nd place)

This wouldn't have got the nod with just the last three results (and obviously didn't get it with the first three after Kyushu either), but all four scores together pushed it across the line.
