Takasago ichimon met to confirm the present riji and deputy riji Hakkaku and Wakamatsu as candidates for the kyokai elections after the Hatsu basho.

At the Isegehama-ichimon meeting, Miyagino declared he will not be a candidate. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/11/21/kiji/20231120s00005000680000c.html

Isegahama has Asakayama, ex-Kaio as candidate for new riji, deputy chief shimpan and yakuin taigu-iin so far. Isegahama and Takasago have 1 candidate each, Dewanoumi 3 and Tokitsukaze 2 o

leaves 3 for Nishonoseki to announce (-> as usual, no election - just acknowledging)

Dewanoumi Ichimon are sending Dewanoumi, Kasugano and Sakaigawa.  Fujishima will be running for fuku-riji.

Last time eligible for Kasugano and Sakaigawa, I think.

We don't seem to have a smirking emoji, so this one will have to do for the following newsB-)

The Kyokai announced the framework for the upcoming board election today, should one actually be happening; the election is scheduled for February 2nd, 2 pm.

From Monday, January 22nd to Wednesday the 24th and only between 1 and 2 pm each day, prospective candidates will be able to pick up a registration form from the Kyokai offices. Filled out forms must be handed in on Friday the 26th, between 6:15 and 7 pm, and the names of all applicants will then be posted at the offices. Should there be more candidates than the allotted 10 riji and/or 3 fuku-riji positions, the election will proceed the next Friday.

The election process will be managed by a committee comprising these oyakata:

Chairman: Tatsunami (ex-Asahiyutaka, Dewanoumi-ichimon)
Members: Kataonami (ex-Tamakasuga, Nishonoseki), Tatekawa (ex-Tosanoumi, Tokitsukaze), Asahiyama (ex-Kotonishiki, Isegahama), Azumazeki (ex-Takamisakari, Takasago)

The counting of the votes is set to be supervised by:

Wakafuji (ex-Otsukasa, Dewanoumi), Hanaregoma (ex-Tamanoshima, Nishonoseki), Tokitsukaze (ex-Tosayutaka, Tokitsukaze), Takasago (ex-Asasekiryu, Takasago), Ajigawa (ex-Aminishiki, Isegahama)

Miyagino is probably acutely aware of the attention on him so could be intentionally choosing to lay low.

I believe that's a nice move from him. Give it time, them...

So if we have the candidates right then it should be as below:

Directors (Riji)

- Dewanoumi: Dewanoumi, Sakaigawa, Kasugayama
- Nishonoseki: Shibatayama, Sadogatake, Takadagawa
- Isegahama: Asakayama
- Tokitsukaze: Tatekawa, Katsunoura
- Takasago: Hakkaku

Deputy-Directors (Fuku-Riji)

- Kumegawa (Nishonoseki)
- Fujishima (Dewanoumi)
- Wakamatsu (Takasago)

A nice overview from Mainichi: the 1st 15 terms since the introduction of the present electoral system in 1968 were without election, in 1998 there were some who opposed the NSK management by Sakaigawa-rijicho and there were 11 candidates and the first ever election, next the Taka revolt from 2010-2018, since 2020 all is back to the ordinary. This time Hakuho was suspected to be the next Taka by the (tabloid) media, but he denounced these rumours early on.

The NSK celebrates 100 years since foundation next year - they want to have this with the old guard: The 3 deputy and 7 of the present riji will continue, new are Takadagawa in for Hanakago (Nishonoseki), Katsunoura for Michinoku (Tokitsukaze) and Asakayama for vacant Isegahama, who had quit (as riji) in December 2022 - all 3 former not eligible any-more due to their age

futile information: 104 oyakata are eligible to vote, 38 in Dewanoumi, 28 in Nishonoseki, 16 in Tokitsukaze and 11 each in Takasago and Isegahama

Just out of curiosity, when kabu is out on loan across ichimon lines, is that oyakata expected to vote along with original holders ichimon or the one he is in?

I mean, with Kitajin being on loan from Tokitsukaze to Dewanoumi, is current Kitajin oyakata expected to vote as part of Tokitsukaze ichimon or as part of Dewanoumi? I would guess Dewanoumi, but I can't be sure of that.

To be clear, Isegahama's resignation was in December 2022.

New directors Asakayama and Katsunoura will be moving up from yakuin taigu iin status (board-appointed executive members). Takadagawa is currently just regular iin member, but was already yakuin taigu iin from 2018 to 2020 and deputy director from 2020 to 2022.

As I just realized we haven't had it yet: Link to the 2022 thread

Incidentally, surveying that last thread there was tabloid talk two years ago that Takadagawa's drop from fuku-riji was part declining internal support and part long-term plan to create room for Nishonoseki (ex-Kisenosato) to move up quickly, but clearly things haven't played out that way over the last couple of years if Takadagawa is at the forefront again. It'll be interesting to see if Kisenosato at least gets a yakuin taigu appointment this year, after the speculation to that effect proved erroneous last time.

I suppose the group is in the somewhat fortunate position that they're having two spots opening up in such a short time, outgoing Hanakago's this year and Shibatayama's next time around. After that second replacement the three Nishonoseki representatives should be locked in for a while, with both Sadogatake and Takadagawa available to serve until 2032. (Probably anyway; Takadagawa's 65th birthday is on March 16th that year, so between the early February re-election and late March appointment dates, which I think is the first time to happen with a potential director nominee since they moved from confirming the new directors immediately in early February a decade ago. We'll see if he's allowed to run in 2030.)

Sadogatake is removed from the shimpan department and is PR top now, Takadagawa is the new head of shimpan, Shibatayama moves to the education department

Sakaigawa (former Kyushu) is jungyo top now, new head of compliance is Katsunoura.

Nagaoya Dewanoumi and Osaka Isenoumi

Fujishima stays as deputy head shimpan only in the responsibility for the torikumi, so after Kumegawa another deputy is needed, and that is one rank down yakuin-taigu Kokonoe. Isegahama is one deputy for guidance, with Nishikido and next consultants Michinoku and Hanakago and with top i-in Nakadachi, who has a few more deputy posts - likely he will go up to yakuin taigu when the 2 retire.

fuku riji Wakamatsu and yakuin Shiratama are deputies for the jungyo

Two more decent commentators who will no longer be available. It's starting to be slim pickings on the announcer front.

if this keeps up we're going to have 15 days straight of Mainoumi.

Was that meant to be Hidenoyama (ex-Kotoshogiku)? I see now that he has been properly appointed to the shimpan department, having done the last three basho filling the gap left by ex-Toki's abrupt departure last autumn.

Kataonami (ex-Tamakasuga) is the other departure alongside Asakayama.

I also see that the punishment demotions for Tokiwayama and Nakagawa have ended, both back to iin.
