A Kyushu tradition where all living ex-Yokozunae converge has been renewed after it was suspended because of Corona 4 years ago. A photo..

Is it churlish of me to be disappointed we've only got pics of these three?

I like seeing the pics of them all together. Am I imagining that it often includes those who've left the NSK?

After 3 years a yokozuna-kai was held again, usually it's before the Kyushu basho. Half of the 8 now in the NSK are foreign born

I don't think those who left were guests in recent years, but I remember such cases as well

What are the things that usually be discussed on yokozuna-kai?

Think of it as an OB-kai for a bunch of lonely guys.

I heard the ozeki-kai takes place in a clandestine speakeasy with more fun.

I would imagine some combination of "Things were better when..."/"These new kids these days just..."/"Do you remember that time when..."/"Now it hurts when I..."

This year the yokozuna-kai was on Nov. 1st, with all 8 members. Hakkaku expressed his hope that some of the present 3 ozeki join the club soon. http://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/980521

Happy to hear that Asashoryu's health is at a level where he can attend these.

The club is for NSK members only, no retired ones - neither properly like Mienoumi, nor forced like Harumafuji

Thanks - I guess that been implied, but I didn't make that assumption.

The yokozuna-kai (only for NSK members) was on Oct. 31st, with all 9 members, as Hakkaku had hoped, 2 new ones (he had definetely rather hoped for Kotozakura) https://www.sanspo.com/article/20251031-TLMJ2XECJVL43LEFZDFU5RVZEQ/#:~:text=相撲

- Hakuho no more

This social gathering for former Yokozuna included current Yokozuna Oonosato and Houshouryuu who participated for the first time. In addition to these two, a total of nine attendees were present, including  Hakkaku (former Hokutoumi),  (former Oonokuni),  Miyagino (former Asahifuji),  Musashigawa (former Musashimaru), Otowayama (former Kakuryuu), Nishonoseki (former Kisenosato), and  Isegahama (former Terunofuji). At the beginning, Oonosato and Houshouryuu welcomed the participants , followed by a toast from Hakkaku. Nishonoseki, who served as the organizer for the third time, said, "The organizer chooses the restaurant. In the past, we've had events at the Grand Hyatt and the Okura, but since I became the organizer, we've been going to (Hakata restaurant) Wakae." Payment is by membership fee. The event was so lively that it lasted until four AM this year. "I was the organizer for about 10 years. I used to do it at the restaurant Oimatsu. We give out congratulatory money to our members for 50th, 60th, and retirement. I think the membership fee back then was 30,000 yen each," Shibatayama explained. He became a Yokozuna in 1987. "When I first joined, to say I was nervous is an understatement.. Kagamisato was sitting across from me. I couldn't even speak. I just went around pouring drinks with my 200kg body. Then he poured me a big glass of sake and I gulped it down." Otowayama recalled, "I was nervous at first. I'd arrive early and wait. On the second or third visit, my Oyakata had a chanko party planned, so I took photos with the guests there and then arrived late (to the Yokozuna Association). So I ended up rushing in for three drinks..."

This year, a certain Oyakata had a bit too much to drink."He was just trying to liven things up.." said one participant.

So 5 Japanese and 4 Evil Foreigners, they're still majority but only because they kicked the soccer player, they canned the bottle juggler and they hacked the real Miyagino. Well, I suppose from the other side we have Mr. Hanada and Mr. Kitao missing too.

That's what happens when they dismiss the ones that liven up the party...
