Muhomatsu Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 Per this article, https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202310240000864.html, a under-aged wrestler (non-sekitori rank, so Makushita and below) was taken to the hospital due to excessive consumption of alcohol. The wrestler involved is from Kokonoe. The Kyokai is thus suspending Kokonoe Oyakata and the wrestler - but the length of suspension is not know. Both Kokonoe and the wrestler have withdrawn from the rest of the Aki Jungyo. In a possibly related note, Chiyoshishi no longer appears as a wrestler on the Kokonoe-beya website. 1 5
Bunbukuchagama Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 Apparently, the rikishi in question was allowed to attend the jungyo because his shisho was also present. So, suspending Kokonoe makes sense in this case since he was supposed to keep an eye on his deshi.
RabidJohn Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 Remembering what I was like as a teenager, I feel for Kokonoe-san. My parents (and teachers) had no idea what me and my mates were up to most of the time.

Benevolance Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 Only because Britain didn't have karaoke bars when Rabid John's parents took him out for underage carousing. 7
Akinomaki Posted October 24, 2023 Posted October 24, 2023 To add to this: Kokonoe is deputy head of the jungyo department and both he and the rikishi, who returned to Tokyo, are under house arrest now, for an unlimited time the heya o should be easy to spot him from the daily jungyo torikumi

No mention of karaoke bars or Kokonoe's presence therein in the (admittedly dodgy) translation of the linked article I've just read...

Different times, as they say. I had a very enjoyably misspent youth, and could play darts and snooker to prove it. 1 2

The heya doesn't have many underage rikishi and Chiyoshishi was the only of them at the jungyo - and he was last on the torikumi a week ago for Ootsu on the 18th. The latest article sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/10/25/kiji/20231025s00005000059000c.html tells that he's sandanme and already gone from the heya website The incident happened on the evening of the 14th and the next day in Obu he collapsed drunk during asageiko and was brought to a hospital. Deputy head of jungyo Kokonoe reported it to the NSK but it wasn't reported in the media then. - Chiyoshishi wasn't on the torikumi that day, he was the day before and on the 17th for the next location Edited October 25, 2023 by Akinomaki

Akinomaki Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Another lower ranked rikishi, adult, returned to Tokyo as well and is under house arrest, he was (drinking) with the underaged rikishi. As a rule underaged are not allowed at the jungyo, unless their oyakata is also there. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/10/25/kiji/20231025s00005000439000c.html Now after Corona restrictions are gone, going out is freely allowed again.
Akinomaki Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Reports change several times a day: the latest Nikkan article tells that Chiyoshishi (of course they don't tell his name) had been told by Kokonoe he would be banned to go out for a year, had been ordered to remain in push-up position for 30 minutes - he was so shocked that he ran away from the heya on the 21st, returned to his parents home and had his mage cut off in a barbershop. Later he learned that he had been put under house arrest by the NSK. He didn't want to drink, but the okamisan of the bar and acquaintances he was with persuaded him to do it. He collapsed on arrival by taxi at the keiko ground in Oobu and was brought to a hospital. When he woke up he was scolded by the oyakata but went on at the jungyo, took part in Tajimi on the 17th, after that was called back to Tokyo with the oyakata and the other rikishi, met with Hakkaku on the 19th and got told "Gambarize from now on" - no mention of a punishment then. - I guess there will be even more variations of the story later 4 2 1
Katooshu Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 Seems like a situation that could've been resolved much better than this.
