Mr. Yamauchi YDC head regarding Terunofuji, 13 bashos (and 7 kyujos) after his promotion: " A bad back and diabetes. It's hard for him to do sumo in this condition. Still, we need to see what he contributes to the sumo world as a whole.  Joining the jungyo (last Natsu jungyo), mingling with the people- he fulfilled his responsibilities  well. We need to praise him for that. I am waiting for his return," he said.

On Takakeishou: "11-4  is historically a low-level yusho, but kadoban Takakeishou fulfilled his responsibilities as an Ozeki and attained the yusho. This fact in itself is important. This sends out a great message of hope to all the rikishi who are struggling with injuries or attempting to return from injuries. Wonderful news for them. I value that facet as well and hope for him to recover and be healthy" he added. The internet was buzzing with the henka business. "The truth is, you go for the yusho, and that's what will be remembered.  A brilliant result.  It's important that he won his regular bout and then the playoff bout. I think we need to take a positive view of his reaching the playoffs. Sumo is about keiko and effort. We should look at that this way as well  There are some people who think an 11-4 yusho leaves much to be desired, but what's important is lifting that Cup. It's important that all efforts should go towards that goal. Only one person can win the yusho. That is the important thing.  He has overcome his knee and neck injuries and won the yusho and that deeply moved many people. The henka question is a complicated one. There is no one answer to that. I watched it many times on video. Parts of the media have said that he was 'flying..' but I felt he was not. Worst case, it could be called a henka. Big difference there, as he did hit first and then shifted. In any case, he wasn't going to let Atamifuji get that right hand grip so that thought may have resulted in that kind of sumo. The way I saw it may be interpreted  that I am biased towards Takakeishou, but it's a viable view and I feel whatever it was, henka or flying, it did not leave  any extremely bad feelings," he summed.

That was a lot more charitable than I thought the YDC would be. Yamauchi seems generally more diplomatic than his predecessors.

Well, they know Teru is fragile, an Ozeki won the Yusho.

They will take what they can get for now.

Imagine what they'd have to say if an M15 guy won the Yusho [and he would have won it outright if he hadn't lost to Tsurugisho].

What run?

The one just about everyone will acknowledge he was on should Takakeisho defy expectation and previous form by actually taking the yusho again in November.

I almost hope it happens, just so I can enjoy the reaction here.

Ah, but even if he does defy expectations and take another yusho in November, can we say for sure he'd be promoted?

This talks about a lot of things but there is no mention of his potential promotion following November basho... they denied him promotion following 12-3D, 12-3Y so would it be a surprise if they deny him following another 12-3 or maybe even 13-2 Yusho?

No mention whatsoever about tsuna run? (Sigh...)

Why would he need to state the obvious? That aside, the quantitative statements of expectation that you're probably looking for will typically come from the shimpan department, not the YDC.

We just had a heated discussion about it in the basho thread; I don't think there is much appetite left for another lap. (Sigh...)

"Ozeki and attained the yusho. This fact in itself is important."
"yusho, and that's what will be remembered."

That's what they said... I imagine the visual included them doing the YMCA dance but with the letters for TSUNA instead.

Of course he mentioned the tsuna run: "If he fulfils a wide variety of conditions and the prerequisites, the expectation that he'll succeed to get to yokozuna gets high." http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2023092501011&g=spo

I say it again: after a yusho, an ozeki automatically is on a tsuna run, the YDC only debates when it's the next best result (runner-up, not just doten)

I like this Mr. Yamauchi. The message might be debateable, but I understand his point.

If I had to choose what's more troubling for sumo as a whole: A) A Maegashira newbie winning the yusho with 11-4, or B) an Ozeki winning the yusho 11-4 against a Maegashira newbie with "clever" sumo, I know my choice for sure.

This has been my thought the whole time regarding his promotion chances.

I like Takakeisho but he just doesn't seem like a Yokozuna. Perhaps he won't be promoted even if he wins the next basho.

Short of some kind of scandal, if he wins in November he will get promoted. They know they need someone to replace Terunofuji soon. Any Ozeki winning 2 in a row will do.

Maybe they are taking a cue from the way they kept piling pressure on Kisenosato.

just shut up and maybe Takakeisho will deliver in Fukuoka and they can shout banzai in the yusho photo op.

Always remember: When Ama made it to Ozeki and got a new shikona awarded, people were saying, or quoted saying [paraphrased], "Wow, Isegahama-oyakata really must think that Ama one day might yusho!"
