Asashosakari Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Nagoya results coming momentarily, but let's get the Aki ballot out first. Hakuoho would have slotted in between Daieisho and Shishi, but with his kyujo announced he is automatically excluded from the ballot. 1. Hoshoryu 10 [score?] 2. Kotonowaka 9 [score?] 3. Roga 9 4. Toseiryu 9* 5. Asanoyama 7 6. Shonannoumi 7 7. Takahashi 7* 8. Oshoumi 7 9. Wakamotoharu 6 [score?] 10. Otani 6* 11. Gonoyama 5 12. Tamashoho 5 13. Tomokaze 5 14. Tenshoho 5 15. Takerufuji 5* 16. Asakoki 5 17. Kyokutaisei 5 18. Daieisho 4 [score?] 19. Shishi 4 TB: [pick?] (* marks rikishi with no makekoshi since debut) The scoring and thus your game assignment: For sanyaku: Please predict an exact record for each rikishi. The target record will be calculated after the deadline and will be chosen so that it bisects the predictions as evenly as possible. The predictions will then be converted into + and - votes as usual; one point for each correct prediction. For lower-ranked rikishi: Please predict for each rikishi if he will finish KK or MK; one point for each correct prediction. (For clarification: If you're expecting an outright makekoshi for one of the sanyaku high-rankers, just predict MK, exact records are only needed on the kachikoshi side of things.) First tie-breaker: From among those 19 guys up there and the further 9 rikishi who are currently just shy of a 5-KK streak (4 'veterans' + 5 newcomers), please guess how many KK you expect in total. Your tie-breaker guess may be anything from 0 to 28. Only exactly correct guesses qualify at this tie-breaker stage. Note: Sanyaku count as correct for the tie-breaker if they achieve KK, they do not need to meet their target records. Next 18 tie-breakers if needed: Correctly predicted rikishi, one-by-one in ballot order, i.e. starting at Hoshoryu. Extra tie-breakers, should two or more players have entered identical ballots: Proximity of their tie-breaker guesses to the correct number, followed by proximity of their sanyaku rikishi guesses to the correct records (one-by-one in ballot order). Final tie-breaker: earliest entry. Note: Rikishi who show up on the before-shonichi kyujo list will be excluded from scoring (even if they end up joining the basho later), so it is not necessary to re-submit your entry if you picked such a rikishi as a KK; he will not count for points anyhow. You may, however, notify me if you'd like to reduce your tie-breaker guess by one point to compensate for the "missing" rikishi. Your position on the entry list (for final tie-breaker purposes) will be deemed unchanged in this special situation. Any other changes to a ballot will be considered a new entry, with correspondingly lower priority for the final tie-breaker. Deadline: Shonichi 2pm JST. ----- Simplified entry template: 1. Shin-ozeki Hoshoryu received rather strong support which led to a target record of 12-3, while the sekiwake trio was surprisingly led by rank newcomer Kotonowaka who was sent down a 10-5 path. Incumbents Wakamotoharu and Daieisho fell short of that and only had to contend with 9-6 targets, although this particular score received a lot of support. As often happens the most unusual selections were entered by WAKATAKE, though outside of Holleshoryu's very mainstream picks (aligned with the majority on all rikishi except 7:6 Otani) practically everybody made at least a few unusual choices this time. It's not a shock that Holleshoryu also figures into the greatest pairwise agreement by sharing 17 of the 19 picks with Hakuryuho. Not far off is Athenayama, however, matching 16 picks with both Profomisakari and Tetsuba. Profomisakari and WAKATAKE ended up disagreeing the most, having just 7 selections in common. The tie-breaker was likely to be hit by at least one entrant, thanks to every number from 16 to 21 being selected, alongside an outlier pick of 13 by Profomisakari. Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Day 7 The first result of the basho came courtesy not of a streaking rank-and-filer or toriteki as is usually the case, but rather new ozeki Hoshoryu. His 12-win target record only allowing for a maximum of 3 losses, a 3-4 start to the tournament was not what the doctor ordered, so it was a quick negative outcome here. Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Day 8 Time for the streaking toriteki now with Takerufuji and off-ballot Daiseizan clinching early KKs at 4-0. No change to the standings as everybody had put their trust in Takerufuji. Day 9 The basho followed up with a more dour day that sent three ballot rikishi to makekoshi: Tamashoho in juryo as well as Asakoki and Otani in makushita all secured an early exit from the game. We managed to cover the gamut of player results with that, from widely expected (12 correct on Asakoki) to highly contested (6 on Otani) to very surprising (only 3 on Tamashoho). No perfect scores as the three prescient Tamashoho pickers all whiffed on Otani in turn. The off-ballot hopefuls were also decimated with Gonowaka dropping to 1-4. Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Day 10 A positive result again in the lower divisions where prospect Oshoumi secured his KK to the delight of eight players. Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 Day 11 No scoring action, but another departure among the hopefuls with Arise not quite doing what his name might be (mis)interpreted to imply. Day 12 With 13 slots still to be decided in just four days, the results were set to come thick and fast now. Kachikoshi were secured by comebacker Tomokaze and comeback hopeful Kyokutaisei, while Toseiryu's debut KK streak ended in his 10th tournament. In addition the day saw sekiwake Kotonowaka's sixth loss, meaning the 10-5 target was missed. In further news: Daieisho took a big step towards his own 9-6 target by clinching kachikoshi with three days to spare. Two more off-ballot decisions were also reached, with Kotosato securing his entry to the November ballot and Tendozan falling short. All four scoring results were quite contested, although only one (Kyokutaisei at 9:4) was a majority choice. The individual scores were all over the place with one unfortunate player scoring zero, but also two others collecting the full four points. This mini-group did not include any of the four leaders from Day 10, and infact three of them only picked up one point apiece so the standings now look a lot different: Day 12: 10/19 Decisions, TB 7-20 Pos Player Pts TB 1 Athenayama 8 17 2 Tetsuba 8 18 3 Profomisakari 7 13 4 Asashosakari 6 16 4 ryafuji 6 16 6 Holleshoryu 6 17 7 Sakura 6 18 8 WAKATAKE 6 19 9 Bunbukuchagama 6 21 10 chishafuwaku 5 16 11 Hakuryuho 5 18 12 Fashiritētā 4 18 13 Yarimotsu 3 20 This day really blew up the table, the range from first to last expanding from 2 points to 5.
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Day 13 Daieisho didn't wait long to follow up on his kachikoshi with the target-clinching 9th win; former ozeki Asanoyama and shin-juryo Takahashi secured KKs to score points for us as well. These were all highly expected results (9:4 each in makuuchi, 12:1 on Takahashi), but even so low scores of just one point were seen, including by one of yesterday's leaders. In addition Day 12 also saw kachikoshi for sekiwake Wakamotoharu (now also just one win away from his target). Kyoda and Kazeeidai went MK to miss out on their ballot-securing 5th kachikoshi. Despite one leader faltering, the other one still isn't alone at the top: Day 13: 13/19 Decisions, TB 10-18 Pos Player Pts TB 1 Profomisakari 10 13 2 Athenayama 10 17 3 Asashosakari 9 16 4 Holleshoryu 9 17 5 Sakura 9 18 5 Tetsuba 9 18 7 chishafuwaku 8 16 7 ryafuji 8 16 9 Hakuryuho 8 18 10 Bunbukuchagama 8 21 11 WAKATAKE 7 19 12 Fashiritētā 6 18 13 Yarimotsu 5 20 The standings don't look like it, but the LKS yusho race is already down to just four players - the two leaders plus Asashosakari and Sakura, all others have too many picks in common with these four to pass them. (Chishafuwaku could still tie for the lead, but this would require results that cause him to miss his TB score for certain, and the points tie would be with players who have better bracket tie-breakers.) The four contenders have made identical selections on Roga, Wakamotoharu and Shishi, so the list of effective picks numbers just three slots: Shonannoumi (6-7), Gonoyama (7-6) and Tenshoho (7-6). If Tenshoho achieves kachikoshi, Athenayama wins outright regardless of what the other two results are. If Tenshoho goes makekoshi: If both Shonannoumi and Gonoyama achieve kachikoshi, Profomisakari wins outright. If only Shonannoumi achieves kachikoshi, Profomisakari and Asashosakari are tied and can both potentially hit their TB scores (13 and 16 respectively) for the victory. If neither hits the right TB, Asashosakari wins on the first bracket slot. If only Gonoyama achieves kachikoshi, Profomisakari and Sakura are tied, but only Profomisakari can potentially hit the TB score (Sakura's is too high at 18). If the TB isn't 13, Sakura wins on the first bracket slot. If neither Shonannoumi nor Gonoyama achieve kachikoshi, it's a four-way tie between Profomisakari, Asashosakari, Sakura and chishafuwaku. Only Profomisakari can potentially hit the TB score (chishafuwaku's 16 is too high, as are Asashosakari's and Sakura's). If the TB isn't 13, Sakura wins on the sixth bracket slot (Profomisakari out on the first, chishafuwaku on the second, Asashosakari on the sixth). In short, Athenayama only needs one result to go right, Sakura needs two (+ not getting struck out by TB 13), Asashosakari needs all three (+ ditto on the TB), and Profomisakari mainly also needs all three rikishi to go his way but has a small TB window on three other outcomes. Edited November 20, 2023 by Asashosakari
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 Day 14 Half the remaining outcomes came in on the penultimate day, starting with Shishi's kachikoshi which was near-unanimously expected by us; no change in the LKS yusho race. Next up, Gonoyama also clinched his KK - Asashosakari was now toast. Up in the sekiwake ranks, Kotonowaka made it three days in a row when one of them moved into KK territory (but his 10-5 target was long gone, see Day 12's report), and more importantly Wakamotoharu collected his targeted 9th win. The final off-ballot record was also completed - Kazenoumi joined many others in missing out on his 5th straight KK. All in all, just two out of nine starters managed to secure a spot on the next LKS ballot. And still no sole leader: Day 14: 16/19 Decisions, TB 13-17 Pos Player Pts TB 1 Athenayama 13 17 1 Profomisakari 13 13 3 Holleshoryu 12 17 4 Sakura 12 18 4 Tetsuba 12 18 6 Asashosakari 11 16 7 Bunbukuchagama 11 21 8 chishafuwaku 10 16 8 ryafuji 10 16 10 Hakuryuho 10 18 11 Fashiritētā 9 18 11 WAKATAKE 9 19 13 Yarimotsu 7 20 Shonannoumi won and Tenshoho lost on Day 14, so both are entering senshuraku at 7-7. Roga and ozeki Hoshoryu also arrive at the final day with their KK/MK decisions still open. The situation is unchanged for Athenayama - a Tenshoho KK would mean yusho. Profomisakari's situation is actually a bit worse than a day ago as the many Day 14 KKs mean there are now just two pathways for him - besides the required Tenshoho MK, he needs either KK for Shonannoumi, or losses for all four rikishi. Sakura prevails if Tenshoho and Shonannoumi both lose, and at least one of Hoshoryu/Roga wins.
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Day 15 LKS was decided when the first of the remaining four ballot rikishi left the dohyo: Tenshoho secured kachikoshi at the last minute in his juryo debut (after a five-day losing streak, no less), and gave an unassailable lead to Athenayama in the process. Congratulations on your...can it be? First yusho! That was a long time coming, considering a career record that already lists seven jun-yusho, one of them of the tied-score variety, not to mention two stints as ozeki. In other final-day news, KKs were also secured by Roga (ascertaining himself of a top division debut from J1e) and Hoshoryu (barely avoiding kadoban status for November). Shonannoumi wasn't so fortunate and ended his Aki campaign with a hard-luck 7-8, which also means his departure from LKS. The final standings: Day 15: 19/19 Decisions, TB 16 Pos Player Pts TB 1 Athenayama 15 17 2 Holleshoryu 14 17 2 Profomisakari 14 13 2 Sakura 14 18 2 Tetsuba 14 18 6 Bunbukuchagama 13 21 7 Asashosakari 12 16 7 chishafuwaku 12 16 9 Hakuryuho 12 18 9 WAKATAKE 12 19 11 ryafuji 11 16 12 Fashiritētā 11 18 13 Yarimotsu 8 20 So, the jun-yusho honours wound up getting shared four ways, with the recipients including two more of the weekend's yusho contenders in Profomisakari and Sakura, alongside earlier co-leaders Holleshoryu and Tetsuba. Asashosakari completely bombed at the end, going 0-for-3 on the yusho-relevant rikishi on Days 14 and 15, but at least managed to take hold of a correct TB prediction, as did chishafuwaku and ryafuji. The new ballot for Kyushu 2023: 1. Hoshoryu 11 2. Kotonowaka 10 3. Roga 10 Toseiryu 9* 4. Asanoyama 8 Shonannoumi 7 5. Takahashi 8* 6. Oshoumi 8 7. Wakamotoharu 7 Otani 6* 8. Gonoyama 6 Tamashoho 5 9. Tomokaze 6 10. Tenshoho 6 11. Takerufuji 6* Asakoki 5 12. Kyokutaisei 6 13. Daieisho 5 Hakuoho 4* 14. Shishi 5 15. Daiseizan 5 16. Kotosato 5* --- 17. Atamifuji 4 18. Kitanowaka 4 All four sanyaku-ranked rikishi retained their spots on the ballot. Pretty nice sekitori additions for Kyushu with almost-yusho winner Atamifuji and upcoming top division debutant Kitanowaka. Shame about Hakuoho's injury-induced exit, but I'm looking forward to him reappearing with another KK streak when he's healed up. Edited November 20, 2023 by Asashosakari 2
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2023 Author Posted November 20, 2023 Scores for banzuke purposes: Athenayama 16 (15+Top) Holleshoryu 14 Profomisakari 14 Sakura 14 Tetsuba 14 Bunbukuchagama 13 Asashosakari 13 (12+TB) chishafuwaku 13 (12+TB) Hakuryuho 12 WAKATAKE 12 ryafuji 12 (11+TB) Fashiritētā 11 Yarimotsu 8 Total: 166 / 13 = 12.77 ---> -5 wins Between possible KK/MK splits of 5/8 and 8/5 I took my lead from the average score as usual, so the three 13-pointers ended up with a fairly lucky kachikoshi. The banzuke for Kyushu 2023: chishafuwaku (Ye 8-7) Y Asashosakari (Yw 8-7) Profomisakari (Ow 9-6 J) O1 ryafuji (Oe 7-8) Tetsuba (Sw 9-6 J) O2 --- Athenayama (M1w 11-4 Y) S Sakura (Kw 9-6 J) Holleshoryu (M1e 9-6 J) K Bunbukuchagama (M2e 8-7) Ryoshishokunin (Ke kosho) M1 Hakuryuho (Se 7-8) WAKATAKE (M3e 7-8) M2 Fashiritētā (NR 6-9) Yarimotsu (M2w 3-12) M3 --- Would the real yokozuna please stand up? This was the third consecutive tournament in which both guys finished with 8-7 records, for chishafuwaku even the second straight tournament saved by the TB bonus win. A win or even a couple more wouldn't hurt once in a while... Ozeki Profomisakari, LKS winner two tournaments ago and then makekoshi, has successfully cleared his name of the kadoban tag. In turn it's ryafuji who will enter Kyushu with his rank on the line. They're being joined by newcomer Tetsuba who was doten runner-up in Nagoya and has now added another, this time shared, second place finish, which was deemed sufficient for promotion. Congrats! The player who defeated him for the yusho back in July, Hakuryuho, unfortunately couldn't follow up in similar fashion and is back to the maegashira ranks. 2 1

Since Aki 2022, ryafuji's results have been: two-way 2nd place, outright yusho, kosho, two-way 3rd place, solo 3rd place, solo 3rd place. Impressive! Thanks for the shout-out! Much appreciated. Probably the kiss of death for Aki though So yeah. I'm very sorry. 1
Athenayama Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 (edited) Indeed I've been running after a yusho in this game for quite some time (23 basho !) and I got it at last ! Thanks @Asashosakari for running the game and to all the players who participate. Competition is always very high! I'm still surprised there are not more players trying LKS....
