The oyakata who ordered his deshi to beat their stablemate, until that stablemate was blinded. A great guy to have in charge of 'life guidance'.

Stipulating the colour of underwear (suteteko) that shouldn't even be seen on "official business" seems redundant.

Mind you, my old school's uniform rules stated that girls had to wear navy blue or maroon knickers...

You forget the medicinal check. Who else misses the guy in pink?

So I did, but that strikes me as internal routine rather than 'official business', although if pics are made public...

So, who's the lucky guy that gets to say "Show me your keks" before a new juryo goes off to report his promotion to his hometown mayor?

Those are only 6 colors by a very strange meaning of "color".  They're all variations on the same color.  If someone has a blue undershirt, do they check to make sure that it's one of the approved variations?  That seems ludicrous.

...Or it's just old grumpy men enjoying their petty power trips.

Was there a time this wasn't the case? I mean globally speaking since the beginning of humankind? Next they go for the yukata and the hairstyle.

Well, officially the rule for the shimekomi (silk mawashi for the basho) still demands a dark color, but nobody cares when one uses a golden one. I doubt this new rule will be enforced for long, if at all.

Shibatayama only knows how to correct Sumo's problems by rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, as it were.  If only the rikishi wore blue all the time, hazing would suddenly stop, yaocho evaporate, and (like moths to the flame) a number of Japanese recruits will be lured into the sport with the various hues of blues.

I doubt he actually sees hazing and yaocho as problems; the only problem is bad publicity that results from the general public learning about them.

My husband is colourblind and really struggled to distinguish between some of the shades. Don't know if there are any colourblind rikishis, but it could be a problem.

It is my hunch that rikishi won't have to worry about which hue of blue is appropriate -- they'll  be told which one is appropriate.

According to https://www.colorblindguide.com/post/colorblind-people-population-live-counter Japanese colorblindness tends to be lower than Caucasians, but it's still a decent chunk of the population.  With 5% of males affected, it would be totally unreasonable to think that no rikishi are.  Maybe Shibatayama is like my father, who could see neither red nor green, and thus could only distinguish blue from not blue, which is why all of the approved colors are blue.  That's rather unlikely though, since it's an extremely rare condition (except among my paternal uncles).

There's a bit of a difference in terms of visibility though. The public would definitely be upset if Ura showed up in a dark shimekomi due to being suddenly forced out of his pink one, and they know better than going through that PR hit for little to no reason.

On the other hand, does the public really care what shade oyakata show up in during public appearances? There isn't such a sense of identity there.
