This is concerning news.  In addition to the injuries to his ribs, he had also injured his right elbow and complained of back pain.  He had been advised to take off 3 weeks to recover.  Seems as though he is putting a lot of pressure on himself to compete.  Willpower can only take him so far.

Yeah, you can't cram 3 wks recovery into 3 days.

That said, I can understand why he wants to be there - if indeed it is his choice.

If it isn't, i.e. there's pressure from above for him to appear... well, that just sucks.

Either way, someone's being foolish, IMO.

No way to recover that fast.

He wants to show hes earned his rank.

Pressure from above.

All parties ARE being foolish.

Thats what ya get in a zero sum game.

Somebody needs to explain to him how kadoban works, he is new to this ozeki thing!

On a more serious note, I see 2 possibilities:

- He is very stupid brave and proud.

- "3 weeks recovery" certificate is BS, it is given to rikishi in order to allow them to save face if things go badly.

"3 weeks" means nothing more than "this injury has been deemed significant enough to legitimately sit out the whole basho with". No different from the old days when every random thing was certified as at least 2 months so that it was eligible for kosho status.

In other words, he would have been "in the clear" in an employment sense to miss the tournament altogether, but I doubt they ever really expected it to take three weeks, considering it's apparently something he's dealt with repeatedly and they thought they could get it under control in just a few days (as they presumably did during past occurrences). But they couldn't just say "one week", because then he would have been expected to enter right about now. Nonetheless that doesn't necessarily mean that he's good to go now, given that he's obviously severely underprepared compared to a normal run-up to a tournament. And almost certainly not at 100% physically, but then that's true for most rikishi in any given basho. How short of 100% he is remains to be seen.
