Nope. That's been Bushozan for ages.

Gonoyama is rather the precursor of Mukainakano.

Along with Takayasu & Asanoyama, Gonoyama can spoil the Ozeki promotion party.

Let's see him beat someone ranked higher than M12 before we get too excited. Although he did deal Ichinojo his only loss during Ichi's swan-song 14-1 juryo yusho.

Is this Nishikigi's basho?  Maybe.  OTOH, Wakamotoharu's bid for the promotion took a fatal turn with his 2nd loss against Nishi.  To be safe, he can't take another loss from here on. 

Hoshoryu almost lost but survived an henka to beat Abi (damned!).  

Daieisho dispatched his opponent with relative ease.  

Day 6:

A more desperate WakaM will bounce back against Meisei whom he has a perfect 3-0 record against.

Midorifuji has been beating Hoshoryu of late.  But I see Hoshoryu beating him this time as Midorifuji appears to be off of his peak form.

A toss-up between Daieisho vs Kotonowaka. I am hoping Mr. D gets his 5th win.

 

Takayasu & Gonoyama keep on winning.  Forget being a spoiler.  One of them may even get the yusho.

Yes, I think he gets it with 12 wins.   But he is probably thinking/hoping to run the table to leave no doubt.   Realistically, having 2 losses at this stage gives him an unrealistic chance at the promotion.  He needs to go 9-1  the rest of the way against Hoshoryu, Daieisho, Takayasu, Asanoyama, ...   

Ideally, all 3 should have only 1 or 2 losses going into the final 5 days to have a shot.

Daieisho mistimed a thrust which cost him his 2nd loss.  

4-2 Diaiesho meets Ura who had the match of the day.  This will be another entertaining match in Daiesho will prevail.  He knows how to beat Ura.

4-2 Wakamotoharu goes against Abi who has the former's numbers.  But Waka is going against Abi who seems to have settled down to his rightful place (high JOI).  I am giving the edge to Waka who can't afford to lose another one before going to meet Sanyukus in the final days.  

5-1 Hoshoryu is the first of 3 Ozeki candidates to meet the former Ozeki, Asanoyama.  The latter appears to be close to his Ozeki form.  This is a toss-up but I think Asananoyama will find a way to and Hoshoryu his 2nd loss.

All 3 won relatively easily on day 7.  Daieisho & Hoshoryu have 27 wins in the last 3 basho.  They need to go 6-2 or better to get 33 wins and the nod for the promotion. Wakamotoharu with 26 wins will need to go 7-1 the rest of the way which I don't see happening.   For all three, 32 wins may not do unless it is with a jun-yusho.

Daieisho is facing a challenge in the form of Asanoyama.   He is a bit off from his former Ozeki form so I like Daieisho's chances here.  

Although Wakamotoharu has a decisive losing record against Kotonowaka, he has beaten him in the last two matches. It will be a tough match but I believe Wakamo will get his 6th win.

Hoshoryu has issues going against small and quick opponents.  He is only 2-2 against Ura, going W-L-W-L.  It's his turn to win .  This match will be fun.
