Gaijingai Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 https://www.newsnationnow.com/danabramslive/abrams-pc-police-ban-certain-halloween-costumes/ by the way, did anyone ride the Yamamoto Halloween train this year? 1
sumojoann Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 At first, when I saw the title of this thread, "Sumo Halloween Costumes Get Cancelled", I thought it was about rikishi being told that they couldn't wear Halloween costumes this year! What is the Yamamoto Halloween train?
Seiyashi Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 I don't normally agree with the PC brigades, but considering what sumo costumes are likely to be like in Western countries, maybe it's for the best. Feels to me like a sumo cosplay for Halloween would be better as E. Honda or something (body shape be damned), but then there's bound to be someone up in arms about cultural appropriation too, and that's the most that ought to be said here.
Katooshu Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 My dislike for those ridiculous sumo suits knows no bounds
Churaumi Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 So many people here in midwest America have only experienced sumo through those stupid suits that they think that's what real sumo is like. Then I show them the real thing and almost always the first reaction is they thought it was just fat guys trying to bump bellies out of a ring, and a lot of them don't even know they can grab belts. I don't mind the cultural appropriation of it, that's kind of the point of Halloween in a way. But I don't like ignorance.

It has a lot going for it! 1) It shows the GOAT's 30th winning Yusho; 2) lots of belt-grabbing, very little belly-bumping; 3) shows only the end of each bout, good for short attention spans; 4) shows the name of the winning technique at the end of each bout to help them understand that not every bout is the same; 5) has music to entertain them! 1

Here's another excellent video to show stupid people what an exciting sport sumo is, and to get them out of that ignorant mindset that sumo is just fat guys in diapers belly-bumping. I find that if I show people videos of Enho (winning, of course!), I may not get a convert to sumo fandom, but it does seem to open people's eyes to the fact that there is a lot more to the sport. I then get a chance to explain that there are no weight classes, the ring is only 15 feet wide, the wrestlers wear nothing but the mawashi, the meaning of salt-throwing, the strong ties with the Shinto religion, etc, etc. Enho did single-handedly convert one acquaintance of mine into a fan, mainly of Enho, though! She kept going outside for cigarette breaks but told me later that she always took her phone so she could watch YT videos of his bouts while smoking!
