Katooshu Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 (edited) Oho's now 2-18 (discounting the fusen) during days 10-15 of his makuuchi tournaments. Losing to a strong opponent like Abi itself isn't a bad sign, but with Oho's history I wouldn't be surprised if it's down from here. Edited November 23, 2022 by Katooshu

I haven't seen a promotion/relegation topic yet but what do you think he needs to survive? Would 3-12 be enough? For the past two basho I'll get it up after Day 11 concludes if no one starts it before that. Very roughly, 3-12 might just be enough, especially if jūryō doesn't barge down the door and/or sanyaku shrinks.
maglor Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 3-12 will probably do it for Takarafuji, but there are some very strong promotion cases being put together down in Juryo. As for Oho, I suspect a large part of his "chokes" are him being paired with opponents much stronger than him. His Day 11-15 opponents last time were Hiradoumi, Myogiryu, Sadanoumi, Wakamotoharu, and Ura - the last 4 are clearly better than him. This time his opponents are even better - Abi and Hoshoryu. He is just outclassed.
Seiyashi Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Sole lead for Hōshōryū. None of Ōhō, Takakeishō, Wakatakakakage, or Kiribayama look likely to stop him. 1

I agree there is likely something in his fighting slightly stronger opponents, but I don't think it's entirely due to that either.
sumojoann Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 What was going on with the monoii involving Kiribayama and Ryuden?

I believe they were looking for a hair pull there. 2

It's likely that Hoshoryu has made some improvement or is in slightly better than usual form, but I honestly can't tell from watching. I'd still be impressed and surprised if he got through that group with 1 loss, let alone 0. I think Takayasu's brought the best sumo this basho and I'm still hopeful he'll come back into the lead. 1

Akinomaki Posted November 23, 2022 Author Posted November 23, 2022 5 sanyaku yet to meet Takakeisho, but only 3 opportunities for that - they won't skip the ozeki bout on the last day, Hoshoryu and Wakatakakage should be the other 2 - Mitakeumi will no doubt be spared and Tamawashi is also not worthy. Shodai should get the full sanyaku schedule - and usually he's strong against them in the final third: he can afford one more loss - it's not the end for him yet as ozeki 3
RabidJohn Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Watching the belated final nails go into the coffin of Mitakeumi's ozeki career has been very sad for me. After all that time getting there, his catastrophic loss of form is heart-breaking and reminiscent of Kisenosato's fall. But that's sumo, which gives as it takes. Now we've got Hoshoryu with sole lead going into the final third of the basho. I'm still lingering on the fence with this lad. He's not as talented as his uncle was, but that's not to say he isn't still very good. Now we get to see whether or not he's a choker, which makes him way more interesting to me that he has been so far. 2
Seregost Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 It seems the Bolshoi theater ballet has been in Fukuoka's dohyo today. Hiradoumi, Terutsuyoshi and Ryuden, and Tokushoryu in juryo, all danced beautifully over the tawara. The funny thing is all of them lost anyways. 1

Bakayokozuna Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 What a weird year for Mitakeumi... Starting with a yusho and a promotion to ozeki and ending maybe out of sanyaku. A shame he didnt stay healthy 1

mt fuji Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 (edited) Enho v Tohakuryu was my favorite match of the day. Enho really had to work for his kachi koshi. Tohakuryu has one of my least favorite fighting styles and I try not to be a hater but I would be happy to see him stall out before making it to Makuuchi. He did show some impressive balance I guess. Benevolance Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Will they feed Takarafuji a few of the juryo promotion hopefuls in the last few days? There aren't a lot of other wrestlers with similar, uh, records in makuchi, but he's not very close to the division cut off where I'd normally see those cross over matches.
