Any sansho prediction/news yet? Hope Sadanoumi and Takanosho will get some.

Just found out that Sadanoumi's sole kinboshi was exactly 7 yrs ago, 2015.5 (vs. Harumafuji). And guess who got the yusho that time? Terunofuji, 12-3.

Daieisho and Takanosho were not born yet that time :-D:-D

I also think Takanosho should get a sansho. But if they hand out more, I'd rather see Daieisho got one.

Makuuchi playoff seems likely tonight I think, the yok vs a guy who beat him earlier in the basho (Punkrocker...)

Happened last basho too. The two guys in the playoff had faced each other earlier

That's usually the case in makuuchi...

Am I correct that the last counterexample to the above was Hakuho vs Toyonoshima (M9w), Kyushu 2010?  And the rank difference tells you why they hadn't met during the basho.

Correct. Among the last 28 makuuchi playoffs (the streak of strictly two-way playoffs since Natsu 1997), the only other exception was the Takanohana-Takanonami same-stable playoff in Kyushu 1997.

I know it's easy to forget, but Takakeisho is not actually kadoban yet. And he has a good chance to get his 8th win against Shodai.

Yeah, I think it will be an easy win for Takakeisho.  I am not even sure Shodai will do his best given that this match has no meaning to him.  OTOH, it do-or-die (go Kadoban) for Takakeisho.

Irrespective of their actual outcomes in a few minutes, I'd like to say that I love the trebleheader of 10-4 vs 7-7 matchups in juryo.

Meanwhile, Tsushimanada joins the relatively short list (which I suspect Yubinhaad has at the ready) of makushita rikishi with multiple 8th-bout appearances.

Interesting.  If two or three of the 10-4s win, then a playoff.  When is that held?  If they all lose and some of the 9-5ers beat their 8-6 opponents, we could have a massive playoff.

Sansho winners are announced:

Shukun-sho: Daieisho

Shukun-sho: Takanosho

Kanto-sho: Sadanoumi

No Gino-sho and no conditions for winning. No additional sansho for Takanosho even if he wins the yusho, my guess is because of the yusho line for this basho

Juryo headed to an 11-4 playoff, as Nishikifuji and Daiamami wait to see if they're joined by Tsurugisho.

Could have 4 playoffs this basho! (Kensho-kin...)

Sumiki wins the jonokuchi 4 man playoff, beating Yamato in the final. He was ready for the ashitori this time, especially after Yamato used it in the first playoff match.

Kototebakari looked like he was done, but showed impressive balance and survival skill to stay in before Hanafusa touched down. Second yusho for little Tebakari.

Nishikifuji helps Daiamami perform a big faceplant, and wins the juryo yusho.

Seems they have plenty of time now, Isegehama read the whole award text for all winners, usually only for the juryo yusho and then ika doubun, the rest the same

Interesting final score in Juryo. Maybe Ryuden will spend another Basho in second tier, depending on if the committee ranks 11-4 yusho from J6 over 9-6 from J3. Four demotions from Makuuchi seem to be a safe bet, though (Ishiura's was no Covid kyujo, right?).

Funny, my impression was he was rushing through the reading because he was running out of time.

Edit: The NHK broadcast confirmed that they're running 30 minutes behind schedule due to all of the ketteisen prior to the start of makuuchi.

I thought he was annoyed to have to read the same again and again and thus so fast. There were two awards in the past, none from the tamarikai now.

Edit: The announcement was still: first the NSK awards

Yeah, not a COVID kyujo. FWIW Mitoryū went 12-3 from J6W with the yūshō a few bashō back and didn't get promoted either.

For a moment today's henka made me wonder if Hokuseiho is really the next yokozuna, or just the next Aran.

Anxiety over securing promotion, perhaps ?
