Katooshu Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 (edited) Ya, I agree. Mukainakano is a very good prospect and should reach juryo within the next year or two, but I doubt Raiho will get past makushita. That said, several of Hak's guys have done better than I expected, so who knows. Edited May 18, 2022 by Katooshu
Seiyashi Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 (edited) 17 minutes ago, Chartorenji said: Think Mukainakano is a lock for Sekitori, Raiho I'm not 100% on due to size and the lack of watch time in my end. Will wait to see him in Makushita before a full-fledged opinion. Conservatively I think Raihō will at least make jūryō. He's better than Enhō in not being as reliant on that submarine tachiai and shitatedashinage, and seems to already have some knowledge of judo techniques, so he's more well-rounded in that respect, but he didn't make the same storming entrance into sumo that Enhō did. Agreed that size is still a bit of a problem, especially as he's a rather mature entrant and can't be expected to pack on the pounds much more, and the real test for him is in makushita. Katooshu Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 (edited) He didn't make a dent in openweight sumo in college, just makes me hesitant to predict him ever reaching sekitorihood. There are lots of skilled little guys out there like him who look flashy against limited opposition but just can't pull it off vs bigger and better guys. I think he's more of that type than an Enho, Ura, or Midorifuji, all of whom significantly outperformed him in the amateurs as well. As I said though, many of Hak's prospects go to a new level, so you might end up being right. Edited May 18, 2022 by Katooshu

I think there are a few candidates, if not worthy after Haru, would certainly be with another KK, so are worthy of attention in Natsu. Kitanowaka: After charging to 8 straight KKs KitanowakaKita hit a rough patch, going 3-4 in three of the following four bashos. Since that time, he has reeled off 5 straight KKs with his 11-4 in Haru putting an exclamation point on this active streak to date. Nishikawa: Starting with 4 straight KKs, Nishikawa succumbed to injury in Aki 2021, going 2-3-2. Following that up with the Makushita yusho in Hatsu, his KK at 4-3 in Haru proves the yusho was not just a fluke. Osanai: Osanai's three straight KKs to start include the Jonidan yusho, and otherwise total up to 19-2. Following a marginal MK at 3-4 in Aki 2021, similar to Nishikawa he achieved a 7-0 yusho-doten in Sandanme, following it up with a 4-3 KK in Haru. Hoping to see more excitement from these three! Kitanowaka finishes with a disappointing 3-7-5. Unsure of his injury prognosis. Congratulations to Nishikawa as he eeks out a 4-3 MK in his last bout and will make his sekitori debut in Nagoya. Osanai finishes 2-5. Edited May 23, 2022 by Ack!

Koorifuu Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 This thread is how I learnt Wakanosho did not make makushita off his 6-1 sd33 performance. Now that's unexpected, but it might help him stay on the list for one more basho.

Honestly no clue what's right At first glance, it does indeed look like the Kyokai's website and Sumodb got Hanafusa and Wakanosho swapped around. Logic would have it that it's Sumodb who got it right. For the kyokai version to be accurate, it'd have to mean Wakanosho was the first sd33 6w in 50 years not to get promoted, whereas makushita promotions from Hanafusa's sd14 4w are exceedingly rare and the only time it's happened in the last 30 years was due to the yaocho purge..

Both English and Japanese NSK pages have Wakanosho at ms51, the DB gets the data from there, so logic would have it that the NSK is right 1

Chartorenji Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 makes sense with Hanafusa now just under the Makushita barrier.
