Quite the deceleration for erstwhile 14-0 Shimizuumi.

Indeed!  I had read that competition in sandanme is quite a large step up from jonidan, and if that is the case, this is the perfect illustration of that fact.

St. Hakuho didn’t make it :(

I've watched some of his bouts. There was nothing sacred about his sumo.

A completely different era, impossible to compare.

He still did the thing.  You have to make it conditional if you want to claim a first here: "In the 6B/Y era" or "in the 15-day basho era".

Is Ōnosato going to be the first person to make Y without a MK?

If he does, first or not, he's going to make _intai_ without a MK, which is almost as impressive. And there are still two other sekitori wallys coming up behind him.

Only a couple of Yokozuna since 1958 have actually posted 8 losses, but I believe technically absences count as MK.

They have in the past on The Wall.  I have, however, exempted those kyujo during their very first basho.

That's a mighty wall to hit.

Nothing's wrong, he was quite dominant in that era, for sure. The thing is he only weighed about 100 kg to Onosato's 170-ish and only had to fight 20 bouts a year compared to 90 in the modern era - so much lower chances for injury, which I suspect will be what does Onosato in, even if there's never an actual 8-loss makekoshi (that seems as imminent as his Yokozuna promotion).

I remember learning that Akebono made it to sekiwake before taking his first MK. That seemed so impressive at the time (and it still is), but making yokozuna without a MK is something else.

Musashimaru had a 2-5 in his sixth basho (7/1990), so not good at The Wall.  OTOH, he didn't have another MK until ten years later as a Yokozuna (1/1990).
