Only a couple of Yokozuna since 1958 have actually posted 8 losses, but I believe technically absences count as MK.

Nothing's wrong, he was quite dominant in that era, for sure. The thing is he only weighed about 100 kg to Onosato's 170-ish and only had to fight 20 bouts a year compared to 90 in the modern era - so much lower chances for injury, which I suspect will be what does Onosato in, even if there's never an actual 8-loss makekoshi (that seems as imminent as his Yokozuna promotion).

I remember learning that Akebono made it to sekiwake before taking his first MK. That seemed so impressive at the time (and it still is), but making yokozuna without a MK is something else.

Musashimaru had a 2-5 in his sixth basho (7/1990), so not good at The Wall.  OTOH, he didn't have another MK until ten years later as a Yokozuna (1/1990).
