33 months after their last bout.  Ikioi was 4-3, though Toyonoshima won the last two.  At 38 and 35, this may be the youngest OB pair ever.

They are literally down over half of the sekitori (29 makuuchi and 15 juryo), either directly or indirectly, so the tournament wouldn't have much meaning.

The tournament has never had any meaning.  It is a made-for-TV event.  The rikishi show up with no or minimal bracing or bandages and put on several phony showtime matches.  Someone is declared the winner, and they all go home.

Well, even less meaning than usual... As in it wouldn't be worth going through the rigmarole for a pared-down schedule missing most of the sanyaku, since your kanban rikishi are out - not so much meaning in the honbasho sense.

Blasphemy. Next thing you're gonna say there's no Santa Claus? Blasphemy!

Also, whoever wins the air con or other prizes up for grabs certainly will find a lot of meaning in it this August - or every August, for that matter. Now someone has to shell out for a new air con when summer hits :-D

The tournament had been canceled but not the broadcast https://www.fujitv.co.jp/b_hp/japanetsumotournament/index.html

It was a talk of Nishonoseki and Magaki, Abi and Kotonowaka as guests, with historical bouts from the tournament - video: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1wR4y177q4
