Yutakayama wins the first of four Darwin matches today. Makekoshi for Chiyotairyu.

Kotoeko wins the second. Makekoshi for Aoiyama.

That said, 12-3JGK isn’t completely without precedent. Toyonoshima in Hatsu 2007 is an example. He didn’t face Asashoryu and only met one sanyaku opponent, Sekiwake Kotomitsuki. Homasho also did it the basho before: 12-3JGK without facing Asashoryu and losing his only bout with a sanyaku, Ozeki Tochiazuma. They must have been more generous in those months.

I'm sure there's some precedent, though I believe it's been far more common not to award 2 sansho for 12-3J.

As I see it, they're requiring him to do something extra to get the extra sansho, and I think that's fair.

Endo finishes 11-4, which may yet be enough for a JY. It's his second 11-4 in succession if we discount his kyujo last time around.

I prefer both winners over the loosers in those matches, so I'm fine with the results. 

Also, I'm very interested in the other two Darwin bouts.

Takakrafuji takes the third. Alas, Tochinoshin will not get his first kachikoshi since November.

Tochinoshin surely is declining. It looked as if he could drop all the way down to Juryo at one point, then he got on a good winning streak.

He rarely uses his once incredible strength anymore, it's more throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks now. It's all logical and understandable, but yeah...

It will be interesting if he will try keeping up in Juryo once he lands there or if he will keep going on until he is out of salaried level.

He's obviously on the way out but he seems to still have enough to bob around the middle-to-lower Maegashira ranks for now. He should be at around M13-14 in November, from where he ought to be able to KK again,.

Ura may have hit the comeback-wall, but it was only a 7-8, which is nice. And it seems he didn't injure anything again, which is even nicer.

Kawaii-boy Chyomaru will stay in makuuchi, Abi just yushoed back to makuuchi. Sadanoumi, Akua and SHO - HO - ZAN will be back, too. Already looking forward to november.

Having said that, looking into his records he's only had TWO kachikoshi since his Ozekiwake basho 13 (!) tournaments ago, three in 16 basho. Frankly, he's doing well with that run of form to even be away from immediate danger of the drop.

I agree he should be able to hang around a bit. We will definitely see in November. 

Onosho got denied that Kanto-sho hard... O.. NO Kanto SHO, if you will. 

No, I really feel for the guy.

Wakatakakage wins and puts the pressure on Daieisho. The shukun-sho winner is going to have to beat Ichinojo if he wants the komusubi slot.

He made it look so easy. Kiribayama sure is the frontrunner for the Sanyaku slot Asanoyama's demotion will open up, isn't he?

I don't think Asanoyama's demotion will open any slots. His is an extra one created just for him. We'll be back to two of each junior ranks in November (or possibly a third Komusubi if Asanoyama only drops one rank, which I doubt).

Oh yeah, you are right. Takayasu's kyujo + record will. I conflated them in my head. Meisei will probably keep a sanyaku rank even if he goes 7-8.

Hoshoryu really struggles with Hidenoumi of all people. 5-10 (or 5-7) rather disappointing after his big day 1.

Was a bit strange, looked like they both stopped competing for a moment, only to realize the match was still on.
