Kakuryu in March 2018? Hakuho November 2019? Edited September 17, 2021 by Tigerboy1966 Correction 1

Seiyashi Posted September 17, 2021 Author Posted September 17, 2021 Sigh. Wakatakakage just doesn't learn, does he? I don't think it's the first time he's gotten kime-held by Terunofuji.
lackmaker Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Maybe the only real option he has is which way he's gonna lose because he can't expect to win too often against the current Terunofuji.

Inosuke stopped him and made him bow properly. Sumo starts and ends with rei, like any Japanese martial art, and that phrase is always cited when esp. a foreigner misbehaves. yorikiried by fate Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 After watching a couple of days, I have to ask: Is matta not a thing anymore?

Joaoiyama Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Crazy statistics, Hidenoumi and Chiyonoo fought 15 times, 8-7 in favor to Hidenoumi with all bouts ending in yorikiri. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi_opp.aspx?r=11840&r2=12026 2

Benevolance Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Okay, let's say Mitakeumi defies statistics and his own talent and goes 13-2, to jun-yusho Terunofuji. That puts him at 31 wins over three tournaments. Could he get the ozeki nod? The answer is no. And I'm mostly posting this because it'll quite probably make Mitakeumi lose tonight, rendering all discussion moot.

If Mitakeumi manages to win 13 matches this tournament, I predict he will be promoted to Ozeki - just not necessarily immediately after this basho. If he manages 13 and it isn't enough, he should be able to manage something that will be enough in the next couple years before he goes into decline. The threshold for promoting him will continually be lowered the longer he stays in sanyaku and puts up Yusho-quality results, even if they aren't close enough together for a traditional Ozeki run.

I don't think he will be promoted with 13 wins. But, I think if he does get those 13 they will say all he needs in November is 10 or more and he will be made Ozeki. Yes, still only 31 wins over 3 basho but that would give him 6 KKs for the year and double digit wins in 3 of the last 4 basho. Something he hasn't done before.
Seiyashi Posted September 18, 2021 Author Posted September 18, 2021 So basically we're now discussing when he gets Goeidoed? 1

Seiyashi Posted September 18, 2021 Author Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) Good lord. The yobidashi just on the Abema broadcast (Junsuke) has one of the most grating calls I've ever heard from a yobidashi. More yobidashi shenanigans: another yobidashi seems to have called the wrong rikishi for the bout before being interrupted by the shimpan. Edited September 18, 2021 by Seiyashi
Gospodin Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 This Thursday I accidentially forgot to mute before I opened the stream. Chance had it they just announced a rikishi, and a young staff member of mine checked into my office as she heard somebody screaming . The expression on her face when I explained to her what was going on was priceless, she will never view me the same again. 6

Gospodin Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) No problem here. Actually having people realize from time to time that their old fart of a boss has a human side is a good thing :-). Edited September 18, 2021 by Gospodin

I think Mitakeumi is primed for a Kotomitsuki-like career, i.e. languishing in lower sanyaku and the joi for a very long time, before pulling his act together and finally making ozeki.
Seiyashi Posted September 18, 2021 Author Posted September 18, 2021 Terasawa (him of stolen bunny mawashi fame) putting together a very nice case for promotion. 3-1 by nakabi including a win over the juryo co-leader. 2
Naganoyama Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 Junsuke? I haven't heard of that one...

Seiyashi Posted September 18, 2021 Author Posted September 18, 2021 (edited) A very nonchalant reaction by Akua to Shohozan's matta draws an amused chuckle from the crowd. And with the amount of tipping to and fro thanks to Akua's newfound penchant for kakenage, their match resembles shokkiri more than the juryo saigo no torikumi. Edited September 18, 2021 by Seiyashi
Gospodin Posted September 18, 2021 Posted September 18, 2021 A curious question: what is happening with the (lacking a better wording) "announcement sheets" after a basho ?
