Pumped for Hokuseiho, he's as big as Enho and Ishiura combined so maybe his Juryo record will reflect that. That is to say he's benefitted from the tutelage of the grandmaster, but also has an imposing physique that can't be taught.

I think he's going to get schooled once he regularly meets up with men close to his size, but also expect him to learn from the experience and make a better go of juryo the second time.

You heard it here first.

雄 =Morning-Determined-Man. A proper Takasago shikona!

More like virtuous rather than determined, but "shi" comes from Shima, same as in Shimanoumi, since Asashiyu is from the same town.

The "yu" character is usually read "o", but Asashi-o would be a) inauspicious given what happened to the last one, b) unfortunately similar to the very different Asashio Taro shikona and c) ignite a whole bunch of re-romanisation discussions on this forum. According to Herouth, the choice of the kanji character has also got to do with the number of strokes in the character.

In the customary juryo promotion interview posted on NSK's twitter, Hokuseiho says he's happy at making sekitori within a year, and says the opponent he wants to face in the future is Terunofuji, who was his senior in high school (Tottori Johoku). When asked about his height, he remarks, "I drank a lot of milk and went to bed early"; he put on 12 cm after graduating from junior high and is now 202cm.

Asashiyu, for his part, comments on the support of heyamates when he fell to jonokuchi after reaching Ms1. He wants to have a rematch with Enho, who was a rival since elementary school (he'll almost certainly get to do so in Aki). Takasago (ex-Asasekiryu) says (as usual) that there are further rankings on the banzuke and he wants Asashiyu to rise further.

We had high hopes for him when he entered at Sandtsk100, and he was slowly progressing until he got injured. Since then he has been very slowly progressing back until he finally made it. Never had a worse record than 3-4. If he stays healthy, surely a Juryo mainstay for now.

More Hokuseihou:

"I want to become a Yokozuna by the time I'm 21 just like Hakuhou. This is the starting point now and I'm really happy I made it. When I entered and got the jonokuchi yusho I promised to become a sekitori in six bashos and proved I was responsible for what I say. If I would have trained harder I would have made it last basho. I wanted that Makushita yusho from the start. so I can be promoted. I've never had a yusho together with the Yokozuna. I wanted to get the yusho and really wanted the Yokozuna to do so as well! The yokozuna helps me out daily and has been teaching me the way of sumo. He called me this morning and said that this is just the beginning. His words are a huge incentive for me. My parents are thrilled and keep calling me sekitori.. The Yokozuna became a sekitori when he was 18. I totally wanted to become a sekitori while in my teens. I'm glad I succeeded."

Please, Hakuho, don't take that as inspiration to try and stick around until Hokuseiho makes yokozuna. I know it's never been done before that a yokozuna was still active while an uchi-deshi of his was promoted to the rank, but surely another 2 years is a bit much.

Wasn't that at least a little bit true for Chiyonofuji and Hokutoumi?

Eh, I meant uchideshi, rather than ani/ototo-deshi.

I have no idea if that's the case in regular usage, but in terms of shikona it isn't, the reading as in Asashiyu is slightly more common historically, and certainly in the last three decades or so it's much more common.

I think the most common word with this kanji must be 英雄 (eiyu, hero), at least it is the one I have read the most. I have also occasionally seen the word 雌雄(shiyu, male and female), which also uses the "yu" reading, so I guess the "o" reading must be secondary, but my level is N2 so don't quote me on that.

_____________

And no Chiyoarashi. It would have been nice to see him back in Juryo exactly 10 years after his debut (which I got to see live), but it wasn't meant to be.

I wish Hokuseiho could develop something approaching a tachiai, even if I personally don't care much about his career.

ゆう is the on'yomi, お and おす are the common kun'yomi. The less frequent kun'yomi おん is also used in the word 雄鶏 (おんどり, rooster)

My understanding of the kanji is that it originally represented the male form of non-human entities (animals particularly), but has been adopted in male names to give off the impression of being strong and masculine. A bit like how 夫 is used - in fact they often serve the same phonetic purpose, the お at the end of names like てつお、はるお、ふみお

He seems pretty smug, considering all the hassle his shikona is causing on SumoForum.;-)

Also, he looks young for a 26-year-old.

It's been 12 years since an Ms5e achieved 6-1. M5w's have been ending up around J12-13.  Is J11-12 his expected landing area?

Pretty much. J10 is probably the hard cap, as that's where Nishikfuji at J11e with 8-7 is going to wind up, and recent trends indicate promotions to a division almost never leapfrog a KK from within that division. And Hokuseiho will definitely be in front of him too, and most likely Churanoumi too.
