I didn't know about about the "documentary".

I was just back in the US and people are getting even "bigger" than I the last time I was "home".

Eating 10 of any "burger" even if it is the "healthier" japan version can't be good for the arteries (not to mention a contributor to diabetes).

With that said, while back in the US my rental car of it's own violition turned into an In and Out Burger (it's been a 10 years).

I wouldn't be able to eat two in a day, let alone carry around 5 or 6 for snacks  :-}

When I arrived home following my first year in Japan, I was stunned by the difference in size between Americans and Japanese. It never fails to jolt me on each subsequent trip back home.

And I must be using the same rental car as you. Mine too inevitably goes straight to In and Out.

McDonalds has been shrinking the sizes of their meals for years while jacking up prices. I wouldn't be surprised that the US sizes are the same as the Japanese sizes now

Interestingly, there's only one occasion that I ever go into a McDonalds, whether in the US or Japan: for lunch when attending a basho in Ryogoku at the Kokugikan.

Invariably there will be at least one rikishi in line ordering hamburgers.

I go to one everywhere I go. McD's has the same flavor palette globally, so it's interesting to see what they do with local tastes. And, outside the US, they tend to be cleaner and the food better put together. In the Philippines, it actually looked like the picture. But, it was at a highway junction in the middle of nowhere, so these were very likely the best jobs around. The one in Thailand was good too. Obviously, if I'm only going to be somewhere for a short time and have better options I don't go. But, usually, I'm somewhere long enough to sacrifice a meal to curiosity. I just wish they'd put their shrimp patties on the menu here. They're leaving money on the table with the SpongeBob tie-in they aren't doing.

He snacks on sausages, not burgers.

Some of the better restaurants are situated around the Kkan, and you prefer MacDonalds?

Oh well, if it's snausages I guess it's ok then.

I went to that one by the Kokugikan. Nice and clean. Very polite Indian kid behind the counter spoke some English, so my wife could order for herself.

Maybe Ura should try to transfer to Michinokubeya.

One has to wonder if Super Size Me was ever shown in Japan...

That guy was drinking a boatload during filming, but from what I've heard some rikishi are no strangers to booze so...

There are ALWAYS rikishi in that McDonalds near the Kokugikan. I make a poin to go there specifically to spot the mostly lower ranked rikishi.

I never prefer McDs to anything as it's barely food, but I always end up there. Usually because I'm there from early in the day to catch as much live sumo as possible, get hungry, and since it's right across the street I can wolf down a quick lunch and get back to my seat ASAP for more sumo.

As any true sumo fan would.

Any true sumo fan would get a bento box or bowl of chanko at the Kokugikan, obviously.

Ah, but they don't allow those down at the sunakaburi section. Plus, I don't eat meat so those don't work for me (I eat filet o fish at McDs).

So you can't enjoy slurping some noodles right in view of the main tv camera?

I'm pretty sure some of the bento boxes are fish only.

Can confirm. Typically I don't eat meat. There were options, including fishy ones and veggie ones. I went with a crab bento among other things.

Were the packaged yakisoba at the Kokugikan any good? I had some takeaway stuff from the kiosks at Nagoya, but it was really dry and cold having been sat out for yoinks. The chanko from Dewanoumi turned out to be the best thing I had foodwise that day.

I'm sure you could figure out some way of giving the Kyokai your money for lunch rather than the mighty McDonalds corporate empire :-P

I usually duck into a Sukya for a quick gyu don. Tastier than Mickie D's, IMO. Sadly, other than an ok bowl of chankonabe, I've not eaten anything at the kokugikan that appealed to me.

I come early too, and go outside as well, but to one of the countless excellent local restaurants around the KKan where you can eat very quickly as well.  But to each his own- I don't touch "western" food when I'm in Japan as a matter of principal.. In the States- I totally burger away.

You have sunakaburi seats? Wow, never knew anyone who had those. Very envious.

I'm totally running this off topic, but any place around the Kkan for single serving chanko nabe? The mile long line to the kkan basement terrifies me, and its too shameful for even me to order a 3-person serving by myself.
