He was questioned again on the 19th after the Bunshun article broke, and in the presence of a NSK lawyer this time. The lawyer went: if you're innocent, submit your phone for checking - particularly location history. And that damned him, because the location history matched the dates and times in the Bunshun report. That's when Asanoyama knew the jig was up and confessed. Really goes to show that most people don't really think too much about how much data gets collected about us by our own devices. Even with location history turned off, unless you activate flight mode, your phone is constantly making network connections that could potentially be used to track you (albeit with considerably more difficulty—this is how some Capitol Hill rioters were tracked for example). But yeah, if he has his location history turned on it's pretty easy. What a thing to throw away your career for. This reminds me of a friend of mine who's very privacy minded and always turns off his phone's location history. His girlfriend suspected he might be cheating on her and turned it back on so she could follow his whereabouts. When he found out she did, the lack of faith was so shocking to him that it was enough to cause a breakup.

That said, with that lack of trust, not sure it's healthy to a relationship either, so perhaps it was for the best in the long run.

dada78641 884 Posted May 23, 2021 By the way, I hope we're gonna get more news on this soon now that the tournament is over. Maybe they'll wait another day or so while we're still on that post-tournament high, but then I'm hoping things are gonna start moving...

Seiyashi 4,109 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) In short, put Asanoyama in as O2w on GTB, and pray for blanked spot solution should he decide to retire after all. Although the messages from his dad and koenkai suggest that that's not the immediate thought right now. Edited May 23, 2021 by Seiyashi E/W brainfart

Tsuchinoninjin 1,291 Posted May 23, 2021 I feel like letting the rikishi post on social media would make it easier for oyakata to keep tabs on them, but I guess it just means they care more about not looking like rules are being broken than actually policing it.

If Yakuza can't fire a pistol without their pinkie finger, just imagine how missing a pinkie would affect a rikishi's ability to fight on the belt! Apologies. I deal with tragedy through humour, even if it is both inappropriate and too early... Edited May 24, 2021 by Amamaniac

Seiyashi 4,109 Posted May 24, 2021 Last update on this sad affair for a bit, also courtesy of Herouth: Shibatayama was interviewed a few days ago and asked about the Asanoyama situation. He said the investigations were not trivial and therefore it was unlikely that they would be completed in time for the board meeting on the 27th. So as originally projected, it'll be June before we hear anything.

Only on a second read did I realize my public school education not prepare me for the rigors of the Sumo Forum.

And yokozuna/yakuzuna, who can tell one from the other? I can't for sure. And I'm a yaochozuna

Can Asanoyama intentionally get infected with the virus and quarantined in a monastery without internet access as his punishment? Or is that too cruel and unusual?
