The astonishing thing to me is the journalist who went out with Asanoyama and got inside info (though he didn't get to use much of it); instead of getting a raise and a promotion, he was fired.  Japan is such a quaint country.

Well, the way he got it was irrevocably tainted once Asanoyama started paying for drinks. You will always doubt whether his scoops aren't more friendly to Asanoyama than they should have been.

At the risk of flogging an undead horse, if he would bear in mind both Hanlon's Razor and Cromwell's Rule, the logic in his videos would be much more defensible.

There's much truth in Chris's videos, but I don't necessarily reach the same conclusions he does. That's okay; he's entitled to his opinions. Promoting discussion is no bad thing.

Without beating my own dead horse and derailing the thread, I don't think I have much more to say about Asanoyama other than he obviously didn't take lessons from Abi. If he knew about Nishikijima going out and thought it was okay for him to do it too, then unfortunately he talked himself into that one. I have seen lots of people do things that I knew were wrong and didn't follow them in those actions. If the NSK is saying not to go out after the banzuke is released, but allows these outings pre-banzuke release, then that's the time to do that. It all comes down to discipline and saying no. The peer pressure is there, but at the same time you yourself need to know your boundaries. Lying to the NSK bosses only made things worse.

I've never been a great fan of Asanoyama, not sure why tbh, so all this carfuffle has been rather entertaining. (Sorry to the Asanoyama fans!). I like Chris' videos, a bit of gossip, entertainment and another view etc, but I certainly don't agree with everything he says. I personally see Chris' overt criticisms and (sometimes over-blown) conclusions as a counterpoint to those who defend the actions (or inactions) of the NSK or remain silent when the worst happens.  Somewhere between Chris and the NSK apologists there maybe some 'truth', whatever that is. No idea where it may lie but it's fun watching and reading nonetheless.

I've said before, I think a lot of 'rule breaking' has been happening over the past few months and lots of people know about it, from those at the bottom to those at the top. This may make Asanoyama's punishment appear somewhat harsh in that context but I think the lying (and rank) caused him the most grief. Another great home-grown hope bites the dust, for now anyway; perhaps paving the way for a great story of redemption and victory against the odds?

More ramifications - Nagatanien (more famously known for being Endo's sponsor) has severed its contract with Asanoyama, since he won't be on the dohyo for a year. The contract was originally meant to be for one year from December 2020, and would have involved a commercial at a later point.

It's his channel, his own field work in making those videos and he can say whatever the hell he wants. That's a good one. Asanoyama has actually lived up to his rank in more ways than one - seems he's been doing a quiet but key job of gatekeeping upstarts while being practically a gimme for Terunofuji himself. That said, considering it's just one more win for a couple of others, it might make senshuraku a bit more exciting but I don't foresee Terunofuji being that much further from yusho.

I want to try this.  When I hit Ctrl+F5 (well, clover F5 on Mac, I suppose?) it kicks me out of the window.  Also, what is the "end" button? [working on a Mac Catalina].

I’m not trying to be overly harsh, but paying for a subscription to support journalists who are knowledgeable about sumo is also pretty cool. Can I humbly suggest that we treat these little paywall defeating tricks the same as we treat live streams?  Maybe don’t broadcast it to everyone?

I don 't understand all of this.  I created a login account, and  other than having to do an occasional two stroke login, it costs me nothing.  If the objection is having to supply an Email address, use this.

As soon as the page loads, a quick control a and control c, open your word processor and hit control v. In a few seconds you have your own version. Have to be quick, the first two moves.

Logically it would be the next 6 basho since the Natsu basho ended before the punishment was announced, and they wouldn't make it retroactive.
