I remember a very funny one, sadly I can't remember the opponent and the basho. They were getting up and ready to go to their corner before the last call when Chiyotairyu realized that his opponent was kind of staring at him. He then stopped abruptly and turned around to stare back aggressively. Haha I wish I could remember when it was. Maybe 2-3 years ago. Edited May 15, 2021 by Athenayama 1
Athenayama Posted May 17, 2021 Author Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) This one was only in an exhibition tournament in Paris but still, they seemed to take it pretty seriously. Unless it was only for the show which is also possible. . Edited May 17, 2021 by Athenayama

sumojoann Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 Here's another really great stare down between Hakuho and Kisenosato on Day 14 at Kyushu 2013. Actually, there are TWO separate stare downs!! The first one starts at 1:56 and the second one starts at 3:30. And guess who lost!!! 2

Kaminariyuki Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 Hakuho is, in my mind, the master of niramiai, the pre-bout stare down. A very serious fellow, that one. I've stopped recording the longer sumo tv recordings on NHK that they have on days 1, 8 and 15, because they do the typical American tv bit. Instead of showing what's going on in the dohyo, they're all over the place with little facts and charts and discussions. Consequently, they completely miss the niramiai, one of my favorite parts of sumo. And, of course, there's no time for such extras during any of the highlight shows.
