Aaand we have something to talk. Enho's botched ashitori attempt and what followed. I had to chuckle a bit. Maybe he should ask ashitori-master Ura for some advice.

Terutsuyoshi seems to have usurped that position as ashitori master now.

Nice funky shots from NHK pre-bout, but I wish they'd also experiment a little with rotating shots during the bout itself.

Hiro Morita is saying on the NHK broadcast that the Onami brothers' grandfather, former komusubi Wakabayama, was also an ashitori expert, but Wakatakakage says he doesn't think he can follow in his footsteps.

EDIT: More trivia - Tamawashi, weighing in at 173kg, was being dragged by his stablemaster for getting a bit too big. Doesn't seem to have affected his deashi though.

Or Terutsuyoshi! Beautifully done. That's already 2 ashitori in the top divisions on day one. The last time we had 2 Ashitori on the same day in juryo and/or makuuchi, was in january 1962. A win by Enho would've made this a first time occurrence.

In the empty arena, just before the start of the bout, the sound of a phone ringing.

Announcer: "It's Kitanofuji's phone."

Kitanofuji: "Oops, sorry, I didn't realize I had left it on."

Probably spends more time playing with both his kids in the house. Once the pandemic is over and he starts running after them in the parks, he will drop his weight naturally.

Sigh. If only this Takayasu had shown up for this bout against Tobizaru last basho. And judging from his post bout expression, I think he knows it too.

Or baking eating too many of his beloved cakes.

Lucky escape for Asanoyama there. Daieisho just a little too imprecise with his thrusting. And at least the Ozeki entanglement from last basho hasn't reoccurred.

Just wait for that Takayasu to appear next week.

Its kinda refreshing when all of sanyaku start with a win.

You would be almost right if not for Asanoyama beating Komusubi Daieisho today. And usually, it's impossible because a yokozuna is almost always scheduled to fight a komusubi on opening day.

In a similar vein, we waited for nine days to get a win from all three Ozeki last Basho, this basho all FOUR won in the first day.

The cable camera or whatever that was during the bow dance was really cool. I liked some of today's stuff a lot.

Will the US President's Cup be awarded this year, or has it already been cancelled?

According to imaginary sources, the Cup was stolen just like a certain election. ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan of Tochinoshin, his demeanour, his awesome strength, and his glorious comeback from injury that saw him promoted to Ozeki.  But ..., seeing him lose today to Ichinojo (for the fourth straight time) has all but convinced me that his heyday is definitely behind him.

And it seems as though he has shifted the plaster on his left buttocks to the right, leaving what looks like a dense square patch of injection sites.  He's hanging around Makuuchi, but his butt (not to mention his knees) is paying the price.
