Seiyashi Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Hoshoryu seems to have taken Hakkaku's words to heart. Third time's the charm; a beautiful uchigake sends Asanoyama toppling for his first ginboshi.
Tigerboy1966 Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 (edited) Well, he doesn't celebrate the way his uncle used to, but you could certainly tell that Hoshoryu enjoyed that one! Edited May 16, 2021 by Tigerboy1966 remove blank space
Godango Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Terunofuji vs. Takayasu is going to be massive. Takayasu is in good form, losses non-withstanding, and has a 4-0 record OVER Terunofuji since his top-division return. 1

Takayasu and Takakeisho are probably the only two opponents on the banzuke that Terunofuji cannot take for granted even if he wanted to. 1

The way things are looking now, pretty sure "the comeback" is in the cards. But that will be sweetened even more if Ura wins the Juryo championship! He's now the sole leader in that race (still early days, but looking good).

I instantly appreciated that observation. But then I saw today's matchup between Hokutofuji and Tobizaru. Tobizaru had the same 6-1 record, and like Hokutofuji, he gives his all every single time! That bout he fought against Asanoyama is still stuck in my mind: such an impressive commitment to planking at the end. So since Hokutofuji won today, can we now say: "Tobizaru's might be the highest quality 1-7 start"? 1

Nah, he'll just straight up lambast the top man and backhandedly derogate his nephew in the process - something like "falling for a simple leg trip" or something. 2 3

But I have to say that today, Enho looked quite a bit better than before. His pulling Sadanoumi out of the ring with him to force a rematch was classic Enho, and he needed both arms and both ankles to do it. On top of that, he wasn't limping after that regulation bout, and his eventual loss seemingly had nothing to do with his elbow and ankle injuries, just another sekitori having Enho's number. I can see Enho toughing it out for all 15 days. But it sure hurts to see him lose! Edited May 16, 2021 by Amamaniac
Benihana Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 I'm a bit concered about Asanoyama. Is it just a bad case of kisenosatositis (i have to establish that), or is there more to it, like an injury, we don't know? 3

One of the English commentators on NHK (can't remember who, either Murray or Ross) was saying everyone's carrying injuries at all times, just whether it's bad enough to go kyujo. That said, it so far looks like kisenosatoitis rather than injury; or at least kisenosatoitis is more consistent with what we know of his troubles getting into the right headspace. At the rate he's going he'll be kadoban especially if he reaches 7 losses by the time he fights Terunofuji.

He constantly finds himself in trouble from the start.
Eikokurai Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 (edited) Asanoyama seems like a guy with impostor syndrome. That is, he doesn’t look like he believes he’s really an Ozeki. He has the skills, and when he executes them you can see he’s pleased with himself, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who believes he’s going to win every time he steps on the dohyo. He doesn’t have the swagger of a man in charge. I hope he gets over it because he has the physical talent and appearance of a Yokozuna. Edited May 16, 2021 by Eikokurai 6
RabidJohn Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 I was surprised to discover Akiseyama's kyujo with a broken jaw was as a result of his bout with Chiyotairyu on day 3. I'd have sworn that almighty wallop of a harite Ishiura hit him with on day 4 was the cause. Maybe Ishiura saw Akiseyama rubbing his jaw after the day 3 bout and decided to take advantage... 1
Gospodin Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Chiyonofuji´s restless spirit seems to be wandering around a lot this basho 1 6
Kotomiyama Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Ura opening the Makuuchi highlights is already one of the moments of the tournament. The boy still has a lot to say in Sumo!

Amamaniac Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 "Big Dan" (a.k.a. Aoiyama) is back tomorrow! No possibility of a kachikoshi winning record, even if he wins all of his bouts. Perhaps he (like Enho) is concerned about dropping out of his Division...
