Takayasu must have learned anti-kaiju tricks from good old Kisenosato. He owned Terunofuji (and Kakuryu too!).

Asanoyama has now sustained consecutive one-side defeats: outsmarted by Kiribayama and overpowered by Daieisho. Today's defeat was the kind that makes one think that the correct translation of oshitaoshi should be ass-whupping. If your primary objective is to get a good, strong belt grip, don't be surprised if opponents decline to co-operate. Ask Tochinoshin.

Heh, I just couldn't help but focus on Konosuke's sweet moves in Kotonowaka–Okinoumi. I had to replay it twice before I could really watch the sekitori and didn't get my eyes drawn to the gyoji

Now that you mention it, those are some sick moves. Konosuke's always struck me as one of the more proactive gyoji; he's the only one of the sanyaku gyoji that I've ever noticed who will crouch down, lean over, or contort himself to get a better view of the wrestlers as they crash out of the ring.

I don´t want to take anything away from Takayasu´s performance, but the moment Terunofuji gave up that insane right inside grip that extended to the left-hand side of the mawashi, the bout was over. Also, if he doesn´t find a way to avoid those constant morozashi, he is going to have a tough time winning four out of the next seven.

Yes, he's very nible and sporty. It wouldn't surprise me if he for example played volleyball or lawn tennis or something similar in his free time.

Terunofuji has been winning despite being moroashi'd on most (seemingly) matches.  But I agree that he will pay for it against strong, big opponents.   Fortunately for Terunofuji, there are not too many of those opponents to stop him from.  He will get his Ozeki rank back,  his share of yushos, and eventual Yokozuna rank.  I.e., he is primed to fill Hak and Kak's void.

I'd say clay-court tennis is more his style!

He will find a lot less tolerance for yokozuna kyujo after the two of them, though. That's possibly a concern for him because the end of his career may be steeper and sooner than expected if one bad injury happens that takes too long to recover.

Did anyone watch the Sakigake v. Asabenkei bout today?  Asabenkei's knees are toast at this stage in his career.  He seemed to have injured his right knee earlier in this tournament, and yet didn't withdraw.  In today's bout he seemed back to normal (his normal).  He was walking and squatting unimpaired.  There didn't appear to be any critical incidents during the bout itself, and yet he couldn't get back up for the final bow, and eventually was taken away on a wheelchair.  

What kind of knee injury allows for relatively quick recovery after what appears to be a serious setback?  

I know most wrestlers try to hide their injuries and put on a brave face.  But even Hakuho, who was putting on a brave face, wasn't even able to squat after his day 2 victory...

Could it be non-knee related? I'd have said it was a concussion, except he was fighting ok for much of the bout, but it looked more like Takakeisho's case of the shivers than anything wrong with his taped knee per se. Considering his left was hanging over the edge, he wouldn't have moved that knee first to rise anyway.

Wasn't it Asabenkei who was left lying on the dohyo like a stranded whale a couple of basho ago? At least the yobidashi didn't take all that long to move him out today.

I suppose that unless the media picks it up or he goes kyujo and there is an announcement before the fusensho bout, we will remain in the dark...  But the reason I believe it was knee related was that he was limping somewhat and seemed to be in pain on one leg while walking the short distance to the wheelchair.

On both occasions, he looked as though his tournament was over.  Given that he is now 0-4 (MK), the incentive for him to come back to the ring in March is somewhat less.

I decided to check the torikumi sheet to see whether Ohnaruto was scheduled to officiate later in the day.  Fortunately for him, he only had the one Sandanme shift.  

But what interested me was that his name was the first on the list of five judges for that shift.  Normally, the first-named oyakata/shimpan serves as the chief judge.  However, Ohnaruto ended up to the right of the backup gyoji's seat.  If he had sat where (on paper) he was supposed to sit (on the other side of the ring), he would not have taken an ill-fated foot to the head.

Judging duty is not for the faint hearted.

As stated by @Yubinhaad in the rikishi status thread, Ura’s out of the race. Nikkan confirms it too. Won the fight, lost the war. Looks like the clash with Enho might have been a Pyrrhic victory. As much as I would like Enho to win, this is devastating.

Ichiyamamoto actually made sekitori before, but was very unluckily injured in his third juryo tournament and went back down the rankings. The other newcomer is Takakento.

But yeah, those two are deadringers for their sekitori seniors. Ichiyamamoto is perhaps a little less lanky, but the face is pretty close.

I remember Ichiyamamoto's earlier time at juryo... his good performances (pre-injury) earned him a much coveted butsukari geiko sesh with Hakuho.

From Chris Sumo's coverage of the bout, it's one both rikishi were looking forward to, but perhaps that final crash off the dohyo was a bit too much for Ura.
