since_94 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Seeing chatter on social media. Due to fever and positive test result for corona virus. Hesitant to propagate fake news. Can anyone confirm?

sumojoann Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Chiyomaru's temperature is above the acceptable level so he is now kyujo. That's all I know. Undoubtedly, they will test him for the coronavirus. If he has it, the Basho will be immediately canceled. If not, if it's just the regular flu or something else, the Basho will continue, as I understand it. 1

The only way to qualify for testing in Japan is to have had contact with a confirmed infected person, to have travelled to an area with an confirmed severe outbreak, or to have severe symptoms of respiratory distress along with your high fever.

That's something I don't understand. When it involves an event such as the Basho, it seems to me the prudent thing to do would be to test Chiyomaru for the coronavirus. If he's not tested and it turns out he has the coronavirus, he could potentially affect the health of many others. If others subsequently became infected, their treatment would be delayed. That's not being proactive.
specialweek 2 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Symptoms vary for those contracting the virus and there have been numerous cases in Japan where the route of infection is unknown. 1
Rainoyama Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 (edited) Article from Nikkan on Chiyomaru : his temperature was 38,6 yesterday night (14th) and 39,7 this morning. He had medical exams to see if it is regular flu this morning and will have more tests tomorow (16th). According to his brother and stablemate Chiyootori (currently fighting in Juryo) Chiyomaru was 'completely fine yesterday' and told him this morning that he had no physical problems at all except for the fever. Chiyootori thinks his brother will be back after a little rest. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/photonews/photonews_nsInc_202003150000677-1.html Edited March 15, 2020 by Rainoyama 3 7

Jaakunakunshu Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Indeed, I think there's no chance they test anyone for coronavirus if they can at all avoid it. If they were prepared to do that, they would have made it clearer (or clear at all) what happens to records and such if the basho is cancelled midway. The fact that they haven't means the plan is to do everything possible to make sure the basho doesn't get cancelled, and testing people would risk them getting a result they didn't want to hear.

That's not being proactive. He also has to have 3 (or 4?) days of high temperature to qualify for the test. Japan's stringent test qualification has been controversial but has been effective in keeping the reported "infected" number down. The test result's turnaround time is about a day. So, we won't know if Chioymaru is infected or not until day 11 or 12. I just hope his temperature goes down to normal. Edited March 15, 2020 by robnplunder
Highway Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 For its proximity to China and size of population, Japan is doing pretty darn well if the statistics are true. They must be doing something right. Here's hoping Chioymaru is alright. 1

That's not being proactive. This is a highly imprudent contagion management strategy, especially when infected persons can be asymptomatic but still pass the virus to others. The sumo we are enjoying watching during this pandemic is only possible due to this heads in the sand approach. Hope all rikish, oyakata, venue staff and everyone else will be ok 1

Churaumi Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Not that it matters for much, but the Kyokai just tweeted an ad for tomorrow’s broadcast.
robnplunder Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Chiyomaru's temperature was high for two straight days. He will now be subject to the COVID 19 test. If he tests positive, the basho stops.

Tests take about 6 hours unless they use one of the shorter tests becoming available, so will they announce it today or tomorrow. One wonders.

For everyone's sake, they should test & announce the result as fast as they could. One more day delay is one more loss to Chiyomaru. And if the result is positive, ugh! Thorbjarn Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I think at this point, the temperature itself seems even more worrying than even the question if it is a Corona Virus or not. 39.7 and 40 degree celsius on consecutive days is pretty darn serious, as in dangerous, for Chiyomaru himself. 2
Tsuchinoninjin Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Yeah, the highest fever I've ever had was 38.8C and I was feeling really bad, can't imagine 40C. Here they recommend going to ER if you can measure 40C a few times over some time period. If they cancel the basho, sumo is going to essentially disappear for a while isn't it? No reporters going to heya, no social media postings, no going out.
specialweek 2 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Suggested fever might be from an infection from a cut possibly through feet.
Churaumi Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) I’ve been over 40 before, fortunately I was young. Some antibiotics and lots of chikaraGatorade got me through. Mine came with an inability to keep anything in for very long, that would be catastrophic for these guys. Edited March 16, 2020 by Churaumi and the plumbing at the heya
Tsuchinoninjin Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Yeah the doctor told me to mix coke, Gatorade and water in equal quantities. It worked pretty well. At that time the only way to get to the doctor was to walk so it was pretty miserable.
