Help identify please - vintage sumo Kimono fabric

A friend of mine did business in Japan in the 1980's and visited the Kokone Beya at the time Chiyonofuji was Yokozuna. As a thank you gift for a large donation to the Beya my friend was given a bolt of fine cotton Kimono fabric emblazoned with the name of Kokone Beya in Sumo Moji. 九重  Does anyone know what a bolt of "Sumo" kimono fabric as gift would be called?! I'm sure it had a special name for exactly what it is.

Thank you!

I attempted to attach a photo but was given the message that the file was too big.

Could it be "KIJI NO BORUTO"?  (And then add "OZUMO" to it?? --- I don't know Japanese so this is just a guess!).

In looking up "Tanmono Kitsuke", it seems that the focus is on the art of wearing the kimono, the purpose of which is to showcase the artistic designs of the kimono and the person that did the dressing.  https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/dynamic-translation/afc04189e9bdcb9cd62fb86bd1d6fbe279471bf1.html

I emailed a Japanese friend of mine to see what he has to say!

The word is "Tokuten"(特典=the direct translation is "benefit")or "Taigu (待遇=condition, treatment) , so Fan club's benefit/condition will be "会員特典” (Kaiin Tokuten) or "会員待遇” (Kaiin Taigu). Example: http://www.ootake-beya.com/supporter

It's usually a calendar or newsletter and invitations for the Heya's parties and events.

Correct, "Tanmono" is a roll of Kimono fabric in general, not a Sumo jargon.

  • Here is the answer to your question.  I sent a message to a fellow Sumo Forum member Ahokaina and she was kind enough to answer it.  This was my message to Ahokaina ---
  • I enjoyed your post about joining a koenkai.  I have a question and I was wondering if you could help me.  I'm trying to find out the Japanese word for a heya thank-you gift (a bolt of yukata cloth/fabric) that is given as a GIFT to a person who gives a large amount of money to a heya.  I've been told that the correct word is tanmono but I believe that that is just the word for the bolt of cloth/fabric ITSELF.  Is there a special word or phrase for this TYPE OF GIFT?  (given by a heya as a thank-you gift to a person who gave them a lot of money).  I appreciate your help with this.  Thanks!  Joann
