All Kyokai members will undergo PCR tests tomorrow, February 8th.

If the events are cancelled, what's the test for? Trying to contain the Mitakeumi cluster? That's quite an about face for them considering their attitude towards it just a few days ago.

Not yet canceled is another event that day, at the same time as the planned start of charity sumo, an online live talk for the official NSK fanclub, also for the free of charge juryo members. With Mitakeumi (!), Abi, Kotonowaka and Izutsu-oyakata, Feb. 11th, 12:30h-13:20h JST, on an extra page on the fanclub site. https://fanclub.sumo.or.jp/contents/493627

The page is from Jan. 28th, just before Mitakeumi turned out to be infected, top on the event page https://fanclub.sumo.or.jp/contents/event

A test for all NSK members (except those already tested positive), as regularly done, the last one was just for those to take part in the upcoming events

Eh, Does that mean that Tateyama’s DPS has to be postponed?

Looking at the latest figures for Osaka,

60+% hospital bed utilisation rate for covid patients looks very dicey. Perhaps it would be best not to send the troops down to Osaka and instead hold it in Tokyo to help localise the spread of the infection?

Yikes. This is a big one. Hopefully all are mild and will soon to be back full health. At least for the Kyokai it’s come early in the inter-basho period so can hopefully be contained and cleared up before March.

No severe case, many without symptoms or out of hospital already. https://hochi.news/articles/20220209-OHT1T51211.html?page=1

The NSK had only announced the sekitori class cases, but revealed on the 9th that till the 4th 204 cases were known of those newly infected after the Hatsu basho. https://www.zakzak.co.jp/article/20220210-UWJ6MKQXUJIXNOA5OHZ4BSVHDI/

Next week the NSK plans to begin with having all members vaccinated again https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOKC10D8I0Q2A210C2000000/

Only one prior vaccination for all has been reported in the past, so apparently this will be only the 2nd time.

Vaccination definitely has prevented further severe cases. We are witnessing again how little the NSK Corona guidelines are worth as prevention of infections. Vaccination is the thing that likely would have saved Shobushi, nothing else.

Shobushi of course died well before vaccines became available. Is it really the case that a second shot was never given to any of the rikishi? That's shocking.

Depends on what shot the rikishi were given as some of the less popular vaccines are single-shot only, but IIRC the vaccines that are available in Japan are either Pfizer or Moderna which are 2-shot regimes. I really hope it was an availability issue, because not completing the regimen is pretty negligent.

Pretty sure it's all Pfizer in Japan and all the wrestlers got two shots ahead of the July basho, though I can't dig up a news source.

Not being an obese rikishi with other underlying health issues would probably have helped more than anything...
Still just pointless wishing things were otherwise, though.

252 is still the same number as on the 9th, should be much more now. The three from the 10th e.g.

I thought that many heya should be classified as cluster, but I haven't found another official announcement like that from Funabashi, only one from 2020 about Tamanoi-beya https://www.city.adachi.tokyo.jp/hodo/juyo/0909juyo.html
