sekitori Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) Kintamayama called last year's Aki basho the Wacky basho. This one is even weirder. It should be titled "Wackier Than Ever" or "Aki basho 2019--The 'Weirdness Continues". Or maybe we should take a tip from movie sequel titles and call it "Wacky II", "Son of Wacky", or "Return of the Wackiness". However it's described, this basho is fascinating. Actually, there is a real movie title that characterizes it perfectly--"That's Entertainment!". Edited September 21, 2019 by sekitori

WAKATAKE Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 The last time 9 people were within one of the lead on day 14 was the 1998 Natsu basho (Wakanohana III emerged the victor in that one). https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909200000791.html 1
Otokonoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Watching makushita this afternoon, I'm struck by how even shimpan Furiwake is able to explain mono-ii decisions much more clearly than Onomatsu (who has not been missed). 1
Otokonoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) Man Hoshoryu looks nervous fighting the first bout in juryo to try and get his kachikoshi. And he's done it! Edited September 21, 2019 by Otokonoyama

And he's done it! I just saw the ending which Hoshoryu looked cool, calm, and collected. To me, he carries on like he deserves to be in Makuuchi. Perhaps, he's the future of Mongolian post Hak and Kak. 1

Despite his supposed social anxiety, Furiwake has been a TV commentator as well and he does that job pretty well too, so I'm not really surprised. He seems a pretty bright guy.
robnplunder Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Ikioi! I knew he will take the juryo yusho!
Midoriyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Just doing some banzuke query research and there is a good chance that Hoshoryu gets Juryo 14 spot in November :)
robnplunder Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Wow, as much as I don't like Takagenji, he did well against Terutsuyoshi. Match of the day so far. Enho gets his 2nd KK in a row. But his opponents are learning to prevent Enho to get underneath which does not bode well for Enho's future. Enho is not going to beat much bigger opponents from a distance.
Asashosakari Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Highest-ranked KK for Kotoyuki in three years.
Kaninoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) Great sumo there from Asanoyama against a game Tomokaze to stay in the yusho race. Tomokaze with his first-ever makekoshi. Edited September 21, 2019 by Kaninoyama

Kaninoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Hokutofuji completes an incredible comeback from 6 straight losses with 7 straight wins for kachikoshi. NHK reports that he is only the second rikishi ever to do so. 1
robnplunder Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) Wow, the fans should demand their money back on that henka by Aoiyama. No fun in that $!@# Edited September 21, 2019 by robnplunder
Benihana Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) There is a saying where i come from. May lightning strike you while taking a dump. Today he deserves it. Edited September 21, 2019 by Benihana 1
Kaninoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Other than Asanoyama, all of the 9-4 rikishi have lost today, making the final day less exciting than it potentially could have been..
Otokonoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Looked like Okinoumi's elbow hit first.
Kaninoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Wow, that was a bit of a controversial end to the Okinoumi - Endo match. Former Tochinonada Shimpan called Endo's heel out. It didn't look quite that obvious on the replay.
Benihana Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 What the hell? Endo's heel was out? No way.
Rainoyama Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) The gyoji saw the shinpan raise his hand so pointed towards Okinoumi but looking at the replay the shinpan was wrong... A mono-ii was needed at least to have another look and explain to the crowd. Endo got robbed. Edited September 21, 2019 by Rainoyama 1
