Eikokurai Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Is it just me or is Kakuryu looking a bit flabbier than in recent basho?

Tsuchinoninjin Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 I watched the makuuchi enterance and then went to family Mart quick, completely forgetting about the yokozuna dohyouiri. It's been a while watching re time...

Eikokurai Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Great scrap between Tamawashi and Mitakeumi. Tochinoshin looks focused and determined. Just the eight wins to go! 1
Rainoyama Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Kakuryu on a mission, looks like he really wants to win that first basho of reiwa, with Hakuho out, it's his basho to lose. 1

Playoff bouts are not part of the normal winning-losing wrestler statistics and do not interfere with winning or losing streaks. They just determine who is getting the trophy or not. Just like the penalty shoot-out in football tournaments ("soccer" for our american friends) is still a draw in regards of ranking points for both teams. The shoot-out just determines who advances to the next round or who is England. Edited May 13, 2019 by Tsubame 1 3

Philioyamfugi Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Goedo throwing around Aioyama like a rag doll. Takakeisho looks right on form and possible contender, he's in the zone. Tochinoshin looks like his old self, hope he gets his 10.
Rocks Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Goeido and Tochinoshin looked very good again . Ichinojo and Takayasu snapped back but not all the way yet. Kaisei looks hurt unfortunately. Kotoshogiku looked pretty pathetic trying to get at Takakeisho's mawashi. Asanoyama looks good this basho so far. Ikioi lost another that he would easily have won if his leg stood up long enough to complete the throw.

According to japanese commentators from NHK yesterday, Kaisei couldn't do much or any keiko because of a thigh infection, his legs are weak so it looks like he is in for a long basho... 1

Dwale Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Mitakeumi v. Tamawashi was a treat, especially for it only being day two. Tochinoshin looking strong again. He keeps it up and he'll get those ten wins. Takayasu won, but he'll have to do better than that. A higher caliber of opponent would have punished him.

Tamawashi laid the nut in about six times in that bout and both of them looked completely gassed at the end. Takayasu did okay there - his whole thing was to keep Endo off his belt, which was successful, and he was patient until he had a chance to push him out. Good oshi sumo against a yotsu specialist, so I think it was deliberate. 1
Oortael Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 I was so mad at Aoiyama going for the belt at the taichai for no reason against a guy who is so much better than him at this. He may have just walk out of the doyho on his own, that would have been pretty much the same. Disappointing ... So nice to see Tochinoshin being himself and handling his opponents like they were 6yo. Kaisei being ill/injured again, so sad. He had a pretty good setup with his rivals around him on the banzuke. Now let's just hope he can get a few wins to stay out of the demotion race next time. It's still good to have sumo back.
Rainoyama Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 (edited) The twins turned 22 today, both won their bout for their birthday. Takanofuji is aiming to return to Juryo, his brother Takagenji is aiming to make his Maku uchi debut next basho and had a good 2-0 start to this basho so far. Edited May 13, 2019 by Rainoyama 2

What a small cake... and they have to share it too. Edited May 13, 2019 by orandashoho

I wrote Takanofuji twice but the second one was supposed to be Takagenji obviously! I corrected my mistake thanks again for pointing it out. Maybe they have to be careful about what they eat since the basho just started ? Edited May 13, 2019 by Rainoyama

Good spot..his upper body is definitely a lot bigger this basho. Maybe trying to compensate for a weaker lower half? Since he mentioned yesterday the ankle injury was 'doing ok, but is far from perfect'. Looks like the extra weight is helping with his momentum at the tachi ai too.

Yubinhaad Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Roga's winning streak was halted at 14 today, courtesy of Hokutotsubasa. Last May he also ended Naya's winning streak at 12.

I'm kinda nervous about Mitkeumi actually. Mitkeumi usually handles Tamawashi easily which is why Tamawashi was tentative. Probably that smack from Aoiyama made him wary too. I expected a bounce back to better form this basho but Mitakeumi's tach ai was terrible both days. I hope he improves.
