Too bad the Trump comes so late in the day and possibly misses the fight of Obamaumi. Obama may not have had a trophy but at least for a long time a wrestler with a Shikona that is pronounced very similar to his name.

That might look odd when panorama cameras get involved: everyone sits on a zabuton and there is the Donald enthroned in his masu box.

I have wondered about the logistics since I heard about this visit.  I can't speak for the rest of gaijinia, but Americans have not been trained to sit on their haunches for hours on end, and it's worse for older people.  On the other hand, a "box seat" with chairs above a crowd on zabutons seems too weird.  My guess is that they will sit with Abe and a representative member of the Royal Family in the Royal Box, then come downstairs for the ceremony.

I would be very surprised if the wives showed up for this and even Trump would know how ridiculous chairs would look with everyone sitting on the floor. Which is why I doubt this story, no matter the source. I still expect them to use the royal box.

What amazes me about this visit is how everyone believes a President just does everything at their own whim. There are protocols involved. State department flunkies, ambassadors, a million other bureaucrats. 100 different people work on and arrange this stuff. Trump will go along with what they say. Why? How important is where you sit anyway? They are going to honor and respect him. He'll be perfectly happy to be honor and respected. No need to dictate form as it all amounts to the same thing anyway.

This President does. He doesn't care about arrangements, he does what he wants, when he wants and does not care about staff arrangements. He also just wants to be center of attention - him in a chair in the masu section sounds exactly like what he'd want to do, regardless of protocol or tradition.

Not true. Trump has been President for over two years. He hasn't done anything like that yet. He's not going to start now. If he attends the basho, he will sit in the Emperor's box.

To me the leaking of this new rumor story looks like a way to add another reason to force him to sit in the Royal box, without having to admit that security problems are too big to handle.

To me it looks like standard opposition party bureaucrats, happens in every country and every party, releasing BS to make the party in power look bad. Then whatever it is rolls around it's all a big yawn and everybody forgets the BS. Just fodder for their friends in the media.

What opposition party? I would agree with akinomaki here. There's kind of a negative sentiment over all to Trump due to his handling of latest missile launches anyway.

 

The weirdest thing about a seat installed in the masuseki is it and the surrounding boxes are going to be empty for 99% of the day.
