The Nikkan (unique) sports awards begin to get published http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/201812190000760.html

Tochinoshin has the most wins, but was kyujo this year: the perfect attendance MVP is Mitakeumi: 53 wins, 2nd Ichinojo with 49

The silver collector award: kinboshi are wins against yokozuna by rank and filers - (inofficial) ginboshi the ones against ozeki, and like at our Hoshitori game, also sanyaku are eligible: the award goes to Shodai with 5, followed by Tamawashi with 3. 2 ginboshi: Kaisei, Endo, Tochiozan, Chiyomaru, Chiyotairyu, Takakeisho and Tochinoshin before promotion - and no sign of Mitakeumi, the next former future ozeki? (also only 1 win against yokozuna)

The "get the hall excited" award. The NSK publishes the most spirited rikishi each day of the basho (and I post it here), and also Nikkan in their paper have such a popularity ranking each day: Kisenosato gets it usually, but since he's absent most of the time, he only was top on 8 days (for the 11 wins he had in 2018). The winner of this award is Endo, who was top 14 days this year. 2nd is Takakeisho with 13 - he pointed last basho, 3rd is Mitakeumi with 9 tops, 8 times have also Tochinoshin and Abi.

Wavelet award

The "big wave" award of the most up and down movements on the banzuke is a standard Nikkan award (this year only in the printed Nikkan paper), this is the opposite: a stable banzuke position (below Y/O of course): the "award" goes to Mitakeumi and Ichinojo, who both have only 2 points of changes this year

The "Love sumo" award: at last one to give to Kisenosato - though he hardly was at the basho, he keeps sticking to (his career in) sumo. The award goes for the greatest yearly average bout length: Kise had 24 bouts and a total of 440.3seconds, his average bout was 18.3s. 2nd is Kakuryu with 14.6s, followed by Ichinojo, Takayasu, Hakuho.

The one who was most efficient with his time on the dohyo is again only in the printed version.

The 51st Prime minister's cup Japan pro sports awards were announced on the 20th http://www.jpsa.jp/topics.html

For sumo there is the basic distinguished service merit award 功労賞 for Tochinoshin, a newcomer award for Abi,

and Dekiyama-oyakata (Dewanohana) received a lifetime award as sports person with distinguished service

and now more from the 7th Nikkan sports sumo grand awards http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201812230000173.html

The "Save energy award" sho-ene-sho 省エネ賞 of who needed the least amount of time per real win (fusensho are excluded) went to Daishomaru, 3.7s on average with 40 wins. Hakuho maybe was in that ranking in the past, but this might rather be the list of the most successful henka culprits. 2nd Chiyotairyu -  4.5s with 38 wins, Abi 4.9s and 45 wins, henka champion Goeido 5.1s - 49wins, Daieisho 5.5s - 46wins

201812230000173-w1300_1.jpg

and at the other end the "Exhaustion damage award" くたびれ損賞 - kutabire-son-sho son is loss, sonsho with other kanji 損傷 is damage: who fought in vain the most - or the one who was most persistent in refusing to lose: Takayasu spent the most average time for his 19 losses: 32.3s. 2nd Hakuho, 15.5s - 6 losses, 3rd 14.8s Kotoshogiku 44 and Mitakeumi 37, 5th Ichinojo 14.4s 41 losses

201812230000173-w1300_0.jpg

later maybe more of what was at first only in print

Today's Nikkan award is the "Best pitcher" award, for the rikishi with the most wins by throwing techniques http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201812240000227.html

Top are Hakuho and Okinoumi with 13, 3rd Ichinojo with 11, joint 4th with 10: Shodai, Asanoyama, Shohozan, Chiyoshoma

the table lists: no. of wins, percentage among all real wins (fusensho excluded), no. of different -nage: uwate-, shitate-, kote-, sukui-, uwatedashi-, shitatedashi- (other rare -nage apparently did not happen among the top)

201812240000227-w1300_1.jpg

They award it to Okinoumi (for more uwate), apparently he also got the "Big wave" award for the biggest movements up and down the banzuke (of those in makuuchi all 6 basho), for the 2nd year in a row.

Today the Big Wave award details - Okinoumi had it last year and the year before - this year it goes to Yutakayama for a total of 32 ranks up and down, 2nd with 30 ranks are Hokutofuji and Yoshikaze, 4 Ryuden with 29, 5 Ikioi with 28 http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201812250000181.html

The "Grieve the gyoji" award 2018 from Nikkan sports goes to Ikioi - 8 mono-ii for him this year, with a 5-3 result in his favour, and 3 of these wins as sashi-chigai, to really make the gyoji cry. 2nd Yutakayama with 6, 5 mono-ii had Takayasu, Chiyonokuni and Endo. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201812260000170.html

Hochi has another award, THE award for this thread - best rikishi of the year. Generally the one with the most wins - and Tochinoshin got that 61st Hochi best rikishi of the year award without dispute. The 2nd for Kasugano-beya after 59 years ago yokozuna Tochinishiki, the last ozeki to get it was 16 years ago Asashoryu. The presentation of the cup and the money is on day 1 at the Hatsu basho http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20181225-OHT1T50266.html

Last year all awards for sumo had been cancelled because of the Harumafuji scandal -  Harumafuji had received it the year before https://www.hochi.co.jp/event/data/rikishi/list.html

The least desirable one: the "Let the money slip away" award - it goes to Mitakeumi: the most kensho the rikishi would have got, had he won that bout - but didn't. Likely the ones are not included where the bout was cancelled due to kyujo - data are rare for this.

631 kensho lost for him, 2nd Goeido with 628, the usual culprit Endo with 621 - the top 3 are close together. 4 Kotoshogiku 467 not won, Takayasu 438, Shodai 422, Takakeisho 376, at last at 8 Kisenosato - he only was in 24 bouts this year - and lost 355 kensho in 13 bouts, Tochinoshin 352, and a sruprise at 10: Shohozan was in that much prominent bouts to lose 333 kensho. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201812270000208.html

A short look at the worst rikishi this year - but of course we all know who it is.

Among those in makuuchi all 6 basho, those with the least wins are: 1. Kisenosato with 11, 2. Hakuho with 31. http://www.zakzak.co.jp/spo/news/181228/spo1812280007-n1.html

The most kinboshi distributed, though he had the least number of bouts, only 24: 7 losses to maegashira - Kisenosato: 11-15-64

Kakuryu has given away 4, with a record of 51-15-24 - Hakuho had 3, with 31-8-51 (the losses include fusenpai)

http://npn.co.jp/article/detail/24964858/

The biggest (proper = vs. maegashira) ginboshi distributing ozeki (collectors above): no surprise - it's Goeido with 18, Takayasu has 11. Tochinoshin with 6 was only ozeki for 3 basho. http://npn.co.jp/article/detail/82924557/

The 55th Best Makuuchi Newcomer of the Year award 大相撲幕内最優秀新人賞 from Tokyo Chunichi Sports goes to Ryuden - at 28 a quite old rookie. The award ceremony like for best rikishi Tochinoshin by Hochi is on day 1 of the Hatsu basho, before the start of makuuchi. http://www.chunichi.co.jp/chuspo/article/sumo/news/CK2018123002000138.html

So we have a normal year again - all standard awards awarded

Tochinoshin got 3 out of 4 (main awards)

http://www.nishinippon.co.jp/nsp/sumo/article/468327/

201811260001_000.jpg

At the award ceremony, Takasaki-oyakata was there to receive the sumo awards for Tochinoshin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIAf-CvWRF0&t=32m24s and Abi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIAf-CvWRF0&t=14m47s - interesting that both these awards start with sumo, the lifetime award for Dekiyama-oyakata from the monkasho was called as the 2nd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIAf-CvWRF0&t=49m47s

The Hochi pro sports award for sumo went to Mitakeumi, awarded since 1976, cancelled 4 times https://www.hochi.co.jp/award/prospo/list.html

The newcomer awards were divided - the basic JPSA one to Abi, the Best Makuuchi Newcomer of the Year award 大相撲幕内最優秀新人賞 to Ryuden, sponsored by Tokyo Chunichi Sports, awarded at the Hatsu basho

There are other awards, like the Mainichi sport person awards, but it has been a long time that someone from sumo got one there 毎日スポーツ人賞

The other awards have proper records since from the start - at least on Japanese wikipedia - but the Japan Pro Sports Awards lower awards are not listed - the full award lists start with 2007 (but most without the sports distinguished service lifetime awards from the monkasho)

the grand prizes of all times are listed also in English https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Professional_Sports_Grand_Prize

the shukunsho are on the JPSA history page  http://www.jpsa.jp/award_history.html

The basic merit and newcomer awards come with 100 000 yen, special -, shukunsho and best newcomer awards with 300 000 Yen (=200 000 extra + the plain award), the grand prize with 1 million Yen http://www.jpsa.jp/award_about.html

The JPSA has as one riji Hakkaku, as one hyogi-in Oguruma, NSK no.1&2 - sumo is always listed first, not just in the award lists http://www.jpsa.jp/about.html

In the past e.g. Kitanoumi and Kokonoe, they also handed out awards

2004 / 2011 (award to Harumafuji)

A few earlier finds from the past - I'll later compile those from 2009 on

Asashoryu got the newcomer award in 2001 and a shukunsho in 2002 https://web.archive.org/web/20021221174728/www.sponichi.co.jp/others/kiji/2002/12/21/05.html

A more detailed top 3 was published by the "reallife"/Weekly Jitsuwa tabloid site, which regularly posts interesting and detailed articles - e.g. a series with the stories of rikishi who died early - Kenko, Daishoho, Kurama, Itai etc.

No. 1 Endo has 36 appearances: 15 top (1 more than Nikkan gave), 15 2nd, 6 3rd places

2. Takakeisho 33 appearances: 13 top, 9 2nd, 11 3rd places

3. Abi has 25: 8 top, 11 2nd, 6 3rd places
