Most Career Basho of All Time (Highest Rank)

7. 157 - Sawaisusumu (Jonidan 53)

*Sawaisusumu is a late addition to the list, active as of Kyushu 2018

Is this the same rikishi as Sawaisamu? http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=673

If so, maybe there should be an asterisk beside his name with a note that the total number of basho includes 9 basho as banzuke gai. Also, he would be at 158 basho, I think.

I was debating about that, because both Hanakaze and Hokutoryu in the top 2 spots also spent one basho off the banzuke. The numbers from the DB give the total number that they've been in sumo as a whole, and there hasn't really been an established protocol for whether to count banzuke gai or not.

I was debating about that, because both Hanakaze and Hokutoryu in the top 2 spots also spent one basho off the banzuke. The numbers from the DB give the total number that they've been in sumo as a whole, and there hasn't really been an established protocol for whether to count banzuke gai or not.

From what I have seen of official record counts, the first basho of a rikishi (in Maezumo or as Tsukedashi entrant) IS counted towards totals even though they are not actually 'on the banzuke'. Hanakaze and Hokutoryu both fell off the bottom and had an additional basho in Maezumo, so I would count them for sure. Neither of them were actually 'banzuke gai'. I would think that 'banzuke gai' should be a special case and either not counted in totals or footnoted to indicate those basho with banzuke gai status.

I've removed him for the time being. Notably banzuke gai is one of those tricky things to work with, so better not to have to explain something if it's not really going to count. Perhaps in 2020 we'll be looking for him again.

Why does Ryuden not count as a Makuuchi return, when he had dropped to Jk17w at one point? Is it just that he hadn't made his Makuuchi debut before then?

That's right, he made it to J12 in November 2012, injured himself, and fell down the banzuke for 10 more basho, landing at Jk17; he yusho'd the next three basho and was on his way back up.  But he only had a "cup of coffee" in Juryo, and never reached Makuuchi the first time.

Lowest Demotion to Juryo Return (6BPY Era)

1. BG - Hokutokuni
2. Jk39w - Kotobeppu
3. Jk17w - Ryuden
4. Jd110w - Wakatenro
5. Jd44e - Amuru
6. Sd94w - Myogiryu
7. Sd84w - Tosayutaka
8. Sd80w - Tamarikido
9. Sd68w - Hamanishiki
10. Sd55w - Seionada

I just realized that Hokutokuni is the only rikishi in the 6BPY Era who climbed from Sandanme to Juryo with only one stop in Makushita. (After his second career start, that is.)

Due to text message related retirements I guess? In ordinary circumstances it's impossible to pass through makushita in one tournament these days.

He was largely helped by the banzuke luck following the great 2011 purge

You're both right, of course. So I guess nobody will repeat that feat under regular conditions.

Although it is not impossible. A Sandanme Yusho in the first ranks of the division (say Sd1-10) would secure a banzuke landing in Makushita Yusho promotion zone (i.e. above Ms15)
