That was more lop-sided overall with 17 wins for East versus 14 wins for the West today, but the longest streak on both days was 9. I wonder if there have been any 10+ bout losing streaks for one side.

Jakusotsu Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Terrible footwork by Meisei. He was essentially sliding under Ryuden.
Philioyamfugi Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Routing for shohozan to KK, back at komosubi at 34. Kotoshugiku still looking better then he has since losing his ozeki rank. Kagayaki did not look heavy against Takakeisho but nice job by the youngster. His buddy Onosho having no trouble. My new boy Diaimami now 2-0. Brilliant win by Enho... Hoping Ishura is watching. Chiyomaru is the only rikishi that can stay low by standing straight up... Not gonna work with the giant Aioyama. Hakahou looking like the boss, but it's still early. Some wonderful sumo today :)
Rocks Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 (edited) How about that Jokoryu? Beat Wakamotoharu and has last basho's yusho winner next. If he can beat Kiribayama he's well on his way to Juryo. Kind of surprised Takakeisho beat Kagayaki. Not just the record against each other but Takakeisho looked noticeably slower against Kaisei day 1. He picked up the pace for this one though and Kagayaki was too surprised to deal with it. I have to give respect to Kakuryu, he played Giku like a fiddle. Hakuho looked very strong too. Shodai wanted no part of that. Tochinoshin won too but he looks like a fighter at the end of the basho already. Long way to go. Edited July 9, 2018 by Rocks
Dwale Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Alright, alright, picture is starting to come into focus now... I don't want to get too hyped on Mitakeumi yet, but I certainly hope he's gotten over the hump on whatever his issues have been of late. I do agree that Kotoshogiku is having something of a resurgence, which makes me happy for his fans. Takayasu needs to pull it together. I like him a lot, but he is not at his best. Hakuho looks like he might be back to his old self, which is bad news for his opponents if so.
ScreechingOwl Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 The day three Makuuchi division torikumi has an almost unbelievable match up pattern: There are 14 top division rikishi with a 2-0 record, none of whom are matched against a rikishi with a similar record; there are 14 top division rikishi with a 0-2 record, none of whom are matched against a rikishi with a similar record; and there are 13 top division rikishi with a 1-1 record, none of whom are matched against a rikishi with a similar record (that includes 1-1 Ryuden, who is matched up against a 2-0 Juryo aite). Now what are the odds of that? 2
Amamaniac Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 After seeing the bout between Tochinoshin and Chiyonokuni on Day 2, I am a little concerned about Tochinoshin's chances going forward in this tournament. If you watch the slow motion replay, you will see that the Georgian avoids pushing with his right hand, opting instead to extend the back of his right forearm (a solid thrust would have been much more effective at that point). On the one instance where he did push out with his right hand, he brought his left hand along side for extra support, perhaps fearing his right hand would not have sufficient strength. I didn't think much of it until I saw him down by the water bucket waiting to serve Takayasu his chikaramizu. He did his best to hide it, but it appeared to me that his right wrist was hurting. Perhaps I am just imagining things...
Amamaniac Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 The Japan TV broadcast for Day 2 featured both Yokozuna's dohyoiri. Hakuho and team were wearing turquoise keishomawashi with purple trim. I have never seen this set before (but then again, I don't always get to see the dohyoiri). Can anyone confirm whether or not this is in fact a new set introduced here in Nagoya? I wouldn't be surprised if it were, since Hakuho needs to find some way to change his luck. After all, he has yet to win a tournament in 2018...

Bumpkin Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 89 consecutive losses. Last, and only, win was Day 6, Natsu 2016.
Rocks Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 That looked more like a love scene from a romantic comedy than sumo but a win is a win. 3

robnplunder Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 LOL! Hattorizakura, what a character. He doubles his win total just like that. He's on to something big. Next yokozuna, here he comes.
