Pandaazuma Posted August 2, 2020 Author Posted August 2, 2020 A poor last day in pre-basho won't help my Masters score. Managed at least to finish Toto as I started - at the top of the points. Not a great basho games-wise. At some points this basho was pretty unpredictable. Glad Teru won though.

ScreechingOwl Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 On the plus side, I won the Tipspiel yusho rather handily. It's the third time I've had the lead after day 14 in that game. The first time I played unnecessarily boldly on senshuraku and was overtaken. The second time I was much more strategic and won. It was the same this time: Tochinoshin and Onosho seemed the most likely to win (and had the most points bet on them), but I managed to pick the winners in the more difficult to read final two bouts anyway. Still, no sense in taking that chance. I regained my ozeke status in Toto with a rather frustrating 10-4-1. Frustrating because I was locked out of picking on day 9, and even thought I e-mailed a winning pick to the organizers, it wasn't counted. (I believe Taka had the same experience.) And more frustration in SG, where I believe I had the third highest number of correct picks in the top division but barely managed a kk, losing almost all my ties. In Bench I had the best team to get an MK and played reasonably well (I think I had the 11th best MP score): slight mistakes a few days all cost me and I also had the misfortune of facing teams I would have beaten on most days but had worse match ups on the days we actually met. Of course in head to head contests these things are not unusual, and I've often been a beneficiary in past basho. Lastly, I finished 4th in the Underdog game, but really only because I rode the Terunofuji train early enough, so not special merit in that. More frustration in Odd, where 9 days I had just one loser, including senshuraku, when I had five winners. I was 6-6-3 in TTT (one day locked out, two days negligent); 7-8 in ISP; a dreadful 5-10 in Quad and out on day 2 in Chain. All around miserable in the pre-basho games. 1
Pandaazuma Posted August 4, 2020 Author Posted August 4, 2020 Terunofuji, basically. I left him out of all my pre-basho games (except Salarycap where he was cheap) as I have a rule of leaving out players with serious injury questions hanging over them and this destroyed any and all Masters points chances in most of the pre-basho field. I did OK in Juryo Game (where Teru obviously isn't a factor) but was let down by a couple of lads. And I think I've done pretty well in UDH but we have to wait for that one. Otherwise...meh. Even Oracle, my staple points earner, let me down. First time outside the top ten for a looooong time there. So I had to rely on the dailies. Odd Sumo was good and I was actually pretty unlucky not to win yusho. Toto was also very nice and I deserved more than 7 points as I was the top scorer in the whole game. Tipspiel also went well and I managed small change in SG and Chain. I have around 32 points plus a probably decent haul in UDH. Hoping to hit the 40s. Andoreasu looks a likely Green Mawashi winner - I would have to win UDH yusho and he would have to get zero for me to catch him. Not gonna happen. Norizo and Kishikaisei have done enough to stay above me in the worlds but I will probably overtake Jejima and go into third. If I can get pre-basho right in one or two of the remaining tournaments, I'm definitely still in the race for the title. Could be a very close one this year. I feel a lot more confident with pre-basho next time though as I now know the condition of the lads. Going into this tournament I had absolutely no idea. Lottery. 1

It was an unlucky jun-yusho for Panda, who lead (by a lot) most of the way to be nosed out on the final day. It was a nice job, however, by Unkonoyama on getting a mountain of points on senshuraku: well played.

Pandaazuma Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 Gary is up in the fourth highest slot in the game as he goes for ozeki promotion. He needs 11 wins, a tall order for anyone. Stefan makes his debut at sekiwake after a strong recent run. Chisha is our only divisional promotee - he is back in the big time as a reward for his Juryo yusho last time. Scott is included here but I'm not sure if he will be playing. There seems to be some kind of problem as he has been demoted into Juryo despite his going 7-8 kyujo last time. See what happens. Looking at Scott's record history, last basho was his second kyujo in a row, and I believe most of the games treat a second consecutive kyujo as 0-15, not 0-0-15 (as the first is treated).
Pandaazuma Posted September 13, 2020 Author Posted September 13, 2020 (edited) Probably the worst start I have ever had, mostly aided by the fact I had almost no time to do anything sumo-related the last few days. First I forgot to change my Ishiura pick in Juryo Game (and UDH). The latter won't matter as I am dead already. The former is a disaster as my team is excellent so I am basically fighting there with one leg. For reference, after Ishiira, Shimanoumi would have been my weak Maegashira pick. Let's see how many Masters points this costs me. Then I picked Takayasu's opponent instead of the pick I actually wanted in Chain. Nice one. Out on day one. I am going to torture myself and keep playing to see how far I would have got. Again...will be 'nice' to see how much this muppetry costs me as well. I also thought Ryuden was injured. But he isn't. That will probably screw me too. So this will be a challenging basho. And my cause wasn't helped by the usual day one lottery where I got slaughtered. I only managed a win in Toto. Well I won Chain too but...you know. Nice birthday present!! Edited September 13, 2020 by Pandaazuma

Pandaazuma Posted September 14, 2020 Author Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) Lol...this basho is already a total and utter write-off. My system requires at least SOME consistency from the rikishi but there is none. I may have to go back to old-fashioned picking from instinct this time. I might as well hand the World Championships to Norizo - ANOTHER mistake has come to light. I left Endo and Okinoumi out of my Hoshitori line-up and I have no idea why. This may end up actually being a blessing, of course, but I missed Endo's ginboshi points there. And naturally I am 'through' to day three in Chain. Bet I 'win' it! Oh, and I am thanking the sumo gods I am not kadoban in SG because I have zero chance of getting 8 wins in this kind of chaotic environment. I predict 4-11. My target this basho is ONE Masters point! ;) Edited September 14, 2020 by Pandaazuma

Pandaazuma Posted September 15, 2020 Author Posted September 15, 2020 Absolute comedy basho so far. Coin toss level. Managed a pathetic 4-3 win in SG but I might as well be picking blindfolded. Annoying loss in Toto. Managed a decent win in Quad but am annoyed at my Odd Sumo loss today. Most of my games are total write-offs already but I am still in one or two as long as a couple of my picks turn things around. The dailies look bleak at this stage but that can be turned around as well. A sigh of relief on seeing my Chain pick lose. My stupidity ended up costing nothing. Juryo Game is still annoyingly good. I am desperate to finish outside the top ten with Shimanoumi in the line-up. Hoshitori is actually pretty good despite my 'mistake'. Actually leaving Okinoumi and Endo out has been a good idea so far.

Kaito Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 I'm surprised there were literally 0 Takakeisho picks in Roto. It's not like I thought he'd be popular, but geez. It might have been a free yusho for anybody that took him. (Or not. We'll see.)
