Tochinofuji Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 Hi all, As a long time fan of Toshinoshin, I'm hoping to get my hands on an "official" paper copy of the banzuke for Nagoya 2018 showing his first listing as an ozeki. Does anyone have any lines on a vendor or thoughts on otherwise getting a hold of one? Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

K. Sear Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 As far as I know John can't send them out of the country anymore due to changes in the rules from the kyokai. I got them from him for a couple years, but this year he had to stop, otherwise I would still be "subscribed" with him.

Makes no sense to me. Are heya / rikishi also stopped from sending a banzuke to foreign supporters? How would the Kyokai even be able to enforce this ban? Spies in every post office? Weird. 1

I have no idea, you would need to talk to John about these sorts of things. John seemed a little perplexed as well when he told me but isn't in a position to do anything about it either. All I know is I don't get banzuke anymore and that makes me a little sad, but I'll live.

I was subscribed to that service for awhile, but stopped for entirely unrelated reasons. I'd ordered things from John before via his old Ebay shop that he'd had to ship from Japan with no problems whatsoever, but for some reason the banzuke just wouldn't show up. He'd end up sending something like 3 copies, and I'd be lucky to receive even one of them a couple of months later. It was weird. This was the only time I'd ever had trouble getting mail from Japan, or that John had trouble sending it.

Two banzuke went missing: John replaced one when the following basho happened and the other just evaporated. I also bought this year's sumo calendar and it went missing, another was sent, then both showed up on the same day. It is odd that you also had the same problem.

Maybe @orandashoho is right and they do have spies in every post office.

Yatagarasu Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I've often seen banzuke for sale on eBay. I've ordered relatively recent ones on eBay without any trouble. I'm guessing that the official Kyokai online shop won't ship overseas, in which case you might be able to use an intermediary like White Rabbit Express or something. 1

Maybe it’s just that the Japanese postal service isn’t that good. I mailed something (a single envelope) from Osaka to Shanghai in 2007 and it still hasn’t arrived.

I suspect the problem is that once mail destined for international addresses is transferred to the care of other postal services, the lesser standards of those services is responsible for the delays and disappearances.

The Chinese postal service is generally pretty good, so I’d say that chances are even it’s Japan or China’s fault.
