Either my eyes are failing me or the cake says: "31th Anniversary".  Sometimes I wonder why Japanese cake shops don't just stick to messages in Japanese.  I guess it's the thought that counts...

Although no one usually refers to a birthday as an anniversary in western culture, I suppose anniversary is acceptable since by definition a birthday is the anniversary of one's birth.

Maybe the chef of the patisserie learned in France and wanted to give it a touch of anniversaire  ...

and birthdays are not something that traditionally gets celebrated in Japan - except that of the tenno

(and Tochinoshin is neither of Japanese nor of English origin)

Takayasu had his 29th birthday at the races today - the 5th race at the Sonada racecourse with the heya lodgings was called the "Congratulations - Ozeki Takayasu birthday memorial"
