Steady the horses. Tochinoshin has never even been close to a Makuuchi yusho (his jun-yusho 12-3s were against zensho performances). Even if he enters the last third with 10-0, the mental thing will kick in and then someone like Kakuryu (and maybe even still Goeido "Questionable Mental Make-up" Gotaro) will be favourite by a long shot.

By the way, the tv-commentator called it okuridashi, Kintamayama called it okuritouchy, but the NSK site still declares Shozan's win over Chiyomaru hikiotoshi - ridiculous.

Nah, while watching the video I wondered if it really was okuridashi, because Chiyomaru was out BEFORE the push already, watch his foot. So I'm not surprised at all the kimarite is different.

From a distance Shodai vs. Ichinojo always looks like Shodai vs. fat Shodai or Ichinojo vs. slim Ichinojo. Anyway, perfect example why trading agility for mass should be considered wisely.

Still no clue who will grab the cup. As much as i favour Mitakeumi, well...it's time for a jun-yusho, at least. Although one behind, Takayasu looks very determined and i wouldn't write off Goeido.

Yoshikaze topping the kensho leaderboard? Nice severence pay for last basho. Lot's of kensho, well deserved bow and purple rain.

I would think so, but I would also think so in the case of uwatenage. Some of the uwatenage of late I would have called yorikiri...

The commentator usually is wrong, I always check him, I saw Chiyomaru stepping out before, I told myself I'll check the Kyokai site for the kimarite, and then it started to rain. And what pun can I make on hikiotoshi? Hickey-otoshi? Micky-otoshi? Even lamer than okuritouchy.

Kakuryu, Mitakeumi and Tochinoshin (and Goeido) only positives on day 5.

Also, Daiamami was robbed blind.

Not really. Goeido got the double grip first, and then Tochinoshin managed to break it to get his own, which was broken by Goeido, and the same thing happened again -- first Goeido with the double grip, then Tochinoshin again. And Goeido didn't give up "knowing it's all over", no, even when driven onto the tawara he twisted away and tried to leg trip Tochinoshin, and Tochinoshin had to keep on lifting and lifting to reduce Goeido's power and lift him out. It was a great battle with many reverses and quick thinking by both, and not until the last fraction of a second had it been decided, and that purely because of a feat of incredible power and stamina by Tochinoshin.
WOW. Breathless just looking at it, never mind how out of breath Tochinoshin must have been.

I agree.  But what about the official kimarite for Shodai's victory over Ichinojo?  It was announced as shitatenage, which is the technique that Shodai used near the tawara, but before Ichi stepped out, Shodai broke free with a spin and pushed Ichi out and down off the ring.  It was this latter and separate action that won the bout.  Not sure if there is a kimarite in existence for a backwards okuridashi?

While I would completely agree with you, consider the loss by Hakuho to Ikioi back on day 4 of last year's Spring Tournament.  Very similar situation (not identical) but the win was awarded to the wrestler who initiated the charge that forced his opponent out and down off the ring.  Guess who the head judge was for that: Fujishima just like in today's monoii committee.  Just saying...

Kakuryu Looks like he has this one in the bag, and shame on me, i always want all sumotori to do great, but when a yokozuna starts doing bad, i get that little urge to see how many losses they get before intai or kyujo.

Daiamami-Yutakayama should have been atleast a torinaoshi, if not a Daiamami win, it looked nearly identical to Takayasu-Tochinoshin yesterday.

God Konosuke's awesome! The loud commands before the bout starts, the intense fast yells during the bout, getting on his knees to see who steps out first, he needs to be top gyoji now! Seeing him handle Hakuho when he called his own monoii would have been delicious!

How about the NSK put Inosuke to good use - a ban on drinking during honbasho, and stick him in the broadcasting booth all day to watch replays and rule on mono-ii.
