jranderson222 Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 They laughed at me at Mandalay Bay when I asked if they’d take a bet on Sumo futures. Anyone know where they might take my bet?
BroomeSumo Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 Marathonbet take bets during each tournament but they have stopped allowing bets from Australia not sure how they go with US, they are a UK company.
Pandaazuma Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 I had no idea one could bet officially on sumo anywhere.
Tsuchinoninjin Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 (edited) There was a website on some amazon web service space that detailed marathonbet's success rate for sumo and a simple machine learning algorithm that could outperform it, but it seems to have disappeared into the nether. All I can find is the github for scraping but the actual analysis is missing :( https://github.com/Cervus1983/sumo-odds Edited December 28, 2017 by Tsuchinoninjin
Gurowake Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 It doesn't look like that site takes Sumo bets anymore. The link from the github page was a 404. But you can bet on who the next James Bond will be as well as some sports I didn't even know there were professional competitions for.

I'm not a gambling man myself, but I'm led to understand you can bet on pretty much anything in the UK.

But not Ozumo apparently. There has to be enough interest such that they can make back the overhead from offering the bets, which includes paying for handicappers to set odds for them if they're using a fixed-odds system. If their handicapping isn't good enough, they'll either lose money to those whose handicapping is better than theirs, or not attract enough punters because their odds are so terrible. I definitely have tried to find online sports books with sumo multiple times in the past, but have always come up empty or am presented with odds that are just terrible (and it's gone by the next basho anyway).
Terarno Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Please let me know when I can bet real money on a 7-7 Ozeki vs a 9-5 Ozeki on Senshuraku... Pretty please.

Yeah, I would think they could set reasonable odds in that situation. They would be more lopsided than if the bout were to take place at other times, but we've seen Goeido fall to 7-8 against KK Ozeki multiple times in the past few years (they were 11-3 and 8-6), and similarly (though not the same) 8-6 Baruto beating Kisenosato on senshuraku for the basho that Kyokutenho won, denying him a place in the playoff. But kadoban Ozeki have never lost at 7-7. All Ozeki demotions since current kadoban system: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_rank=o&form1_year=>1963&form2_rank=s None of them even picked up a 7th win after their 8th lost. I don't know how large the sample size is though; it's harder to query for since it involves the record after day 14 and the result of the previous basho. If someone wants to run both queries and use Excel or something to match them up, though, have at it. edit: query is a bit more expansive than needed; further research shows that the current system started in 1969, not 1964, but it doesn't affect the results of the query.
