"resign as riji" -- which I interpret as accepting a demotion before it is enforced, leaving the Kyokai leadership but continuing as Oyakata and staying in the Kyokai.
His punishment can't be lower than that of Takanohana since he is the offender's Oyakata.

Not resign from sumo, to resign as a riji, get a demotion as a Kyokai member.

The haven't enforced kyujo for Hatsu 2018, right? If they fight in the January basho, can they still earn kensho? Or can the NSK forbid sponsors to put kensho on their bouts?

Wouldn't want to be Kakuryu right now. He was already under pressure to perform well or retire having missed some or all of the previous four tournaments,  now he's being punished for someone else's bad behavior and there will be even more scrutiny on him.

Has there ever been a case where the "retirement advice " was given but the Kyokai ignored it?

Really? Get yelled at by Harumafuji then pushed away is a months pay for going berserk. My flight got delayed, probably should blame Kakuryu for that too.

I mean if he'd left a mark on Harumafuji after Takanoiwa got hit trying to subdue him the penalty would've been worse no doubt. Before Takanoiwa got hit? Well, this isn't minority report.

Sanspo clarifies that they intend to put him at J14w in that case. I'm not sure if that's going to be the last word on the matter though.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm willing to stake my mahjong and say that Hakuhou and Kakuryuu stood by for a good few seconds as Harumafuji was thrashing Takanoiwa, as in their eyes he deserved it for being a disrespectful person towards a Yokozuna. Don't forget the reason given for the assault. "He needed to be taught respect" something Harumafuji said not in private but during his intai press conference   Harumafuji actually went berserk on Hakuhou's behalf, as the disrespect initially was aimed at Hakuhou.

Nobody is entirely sure he will be nominated by his own Ichimon this time. He may recuse himself, for all we know. I somehow doubt he will run for office.

I've mentioned this before but I should say it again. I'm no yokozuna, but if someone else started suddenly thrashing someone in our company I'd probably be a deer in headlights for a good while too before realizing I should probably do something about it...

Agreed, I would be surprised if this simply leads to him being riji again by April. That wouldn't be much of a punishment.
