The basis of play:

face-off, advance, clash or turn --

'til one falls or leaves.

(I'm afraid this isn't very lyrical... but I'll try again soon. I really like the notion of sumo as a topic for haiku.)

Knitting, chatting, food

and hot tea all left when we

hear, "Tachi-ai"

Good morning from Europe to you, Yamanashi!

Each vowel will be one "syllable" - or, a term of art I recently learned, "more" ("moh-ray").

Ta-chi a-i.

Of course, if I was being completely strict with "more" rather than syllables, I'd have to make a very harsh rewrite of my latest effort.

It’s ‘morae’ in plural and ‘mora’ in singular. :)

Oooh, yes! Thank you - I'd been fumbling and not getting what I needed to have. Thanks for the reminder!

Sure. I’ve studied and work in the linguistics field so this sort of jargon is in my brain somewhere.

Life can be cruel
It had been so sweet before
But now it's a hell

Gone are the glories,
Remaining is a nightmare,
There is no escape

You try to hang on
But it'is slipping away
Everyone knows it

igniominiously
with honour fretted away,
the fight is over.

This fall is painful,
Its wound will need long healing
But there is a cure.

A new life awaits
with Oyakata honour
and regained respect

Always remembered
as the national champion
ending a long drought.
