It's never confirmed unless it's official. AFAIK all kyujos from jungyo also need  health certificates. They haven't been made public. Yet.

No, he won’t. The Kyokai decides which shinpan join the jungyo and have decided today that Takanohana will not be one of them. This, after Takanohana declared he was going.  With one deshi suspended , one clearly not back in shape yet and another injured, "it's better if he stays at the heya and coaches  and guides his deshi," was the explanation given for the sudden change of plans.

Hakuhou seems to be back and raring to go. He won the 16 rikishi knockout "tournament" easily yesterday.  "I was itching to get back.. I had a great start, huh? I feel I'm back," said Hakuhou. At the dedication shrine dohyo iri, he did not have his seta (leather soled sandals) on and did it barefoot. " I got my power through my feet.." he said.. May? "I will be flying out from day 1!"

Now imagine Chiyomaru getting lost on a hiking trip in a remote wilderness. The last deshi mysteriously disappeared *burp* already 30 minutes ago and there's no food for miles and miles. So nice to see Hakuho looking strong . I hope he doesn't re-injure a toe in the next basho, tendons and ligaments can take forever to really heal.

The NSK today published medical certificates for the kyujo rikishi:

For Takanoiwa: stress disorder after psychic trauma - and a sore left ankle. He and Takayoshitoshi train at the heya, in the care of Taka, who was ordered to take care of his rikishi at home and to not appear at his new work. Takayoshitoshi is suspended and needs no certificate.

Kisenosato still has the (pectoralis) major muscle damage.

Was there any mention that his injury has improved, even a little? If it hasn't by now, it probably never will. There are many instances of advisors mismanaging rikishis' injuries but the avoidance of surgical intervention to repair his torn pectoral muscle  (the only way to restore it to full usage) seems to be one of the most negligent ones ever. 

I was never a big fan of Kisenosato but his playoff victory against Terunofuji in the 2017 Haru basho was one of the most courageous performances I have ever seen in sumo. It's too bad that it was the last yokozuna-like performance of his we will probably ever see.

Well, you probably could have left that paragraph - a lady doctor mounted the dohyo and massaged the Mayor's heart but after a few minutes was told to get off via a public announcement-three times to be precise- after some fans pointed out that women are not allowed on the dohyo.

In the Edo period, women were only allowed to watch on senshuraku, the last day. Now that is the most popular day, but then all interesting bouts were over, only makushita and below took part. Shortly after Edo became Tokyo, in 1872 women were allowed to watch all days - sumo was in a slump then and the sujo of old helped to get it popular again.

But women are still banned from the kokugikan dohyo - even girls who have won the preliminary wampaku tournaments, can't attend the final one in the kokugikan. Asahi article on this from 1991.07.03 as this happened:

There was some pressure from politicians to abandon the strict tradition - the NSK refused both times:

- Hatsu 1990 the first female chief cabinet secretary wanted to hand over the prime minister's cup

- as she became Osaka governor in 2000, Fusae Ota thought of not awarding the Osaka governor award for Haru, if she wouldn't be allowed to hand it over herself

Oh, and about the actual sumo- Hakuhou and Kakuryuu did some serious training for the first time yesterday. Toe-stricken Hakuhou was asked if he will be gradually upping the pace. "I guess so. The condition of my sole and regaining my ring sense will be my focus. The next two three days will feel the same.." he answered. Kakuryuu mounted the dohyo at about the the same time. "It's a coincidence," quipped Hakuhou with a wry smile.  Asked about the scandal: "Well, it was a life threatening situation, nothing like honbasho.. "

"I was really tired so I'm doing my best to return more than refreshed. As for my fingers, the situation is mostly better but I still have some pain, " said Kakuryuu.

Takayasu at it fiercely again and talking about the yusho again. He took on Kagayaki and Hokutofuji today at the jungyo, 8-5. Coming off two consecutive 12-3 records, he seems confident. "I feel the yusho is within my grasp. If there is something I lack , keiko will fix it. That's all I can do," he said. His instability is his weakness. "I am specifically working on my weak points, and the keiko is really very good. I hope not to do defensive sumo, but  to be in charge and charge!" he exclaimed. "If the rikishi who are gambarizing do good sumo, the basho will be exciting. If you wanna see results, it's all about the keiko!" declared Kasugano Oyakata, head of jungyo affairs.

Today is Ichinojou's 25th birthday, and he ate a cake given to him by the press and talked to the press. "This last year,. I lost some weight at some point, added muscle, regained the weight, and I think I'm in a good place right now (215 kilos). Now that I'm  25, I'm aiming for Ozeki. I shall gambarize," he said loud and clear, cake in hand and mouth. He was 9-6 last basho. "I really wanted double digit wins but showed some really bad sumo as well.  I will definitely aim for double digit wins next basho!" he declared.

But can he have his cake and eat it too? The cake looks like a cupcake next to him..

News as PR for the Raiden basho, the jungyo in Tomi-city on the 11th.

The shikona of Raiden, who had his 250s birthday last year, is listed on a  kind of ita-banzuke for an ancient jungyo-like event kept at the Wakamiya Hachimangu, which has a small Raiden shrine on the premises. Takayasu was on fire today at the jungyo in Shizuoka, going 9-1 against Endou. He is the only one among the Y/Os that has been doing serious training so far this jungyo. "It was good keiko. When you get promoted to sanyaku, it is difficult to get a good record. I really struggled at first. Looking back, I think that if I had trained more it would have been better. If this training session will help Endou get results, it will be great, right?" he said later.
