Tsuchinoninjin Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 For some reason this basho it is stunningly obvious how similar Ichinojo's and Kagayaki's sumo are.

Ichinojo will go for the belt or grip, but never see Kagayaki doing so. Both tall, good rivalry between the two . Record about even i think
Tiger Tanaka Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Everyone take a step back and appreciate what we are watching. What an absolute legend. Hak, you are the man. Love Takekeisho too, and this will serve as a great learning experience for him. Does anyone else notice and love that Arawashi always has salt on his belt? My wife is getting into sumo as well, and very invested and riveted by the salting. Giving grades for those who cleanse the dohyo adequately. She finally pointed out to me that Arawashi actually throws salt on his belt and it just sits there until the match starts :) 4

Dwale Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Very much looking forward to Hakuho v. Yoshikaze as well as Tochinoshin v. Ura. (Tochinoshin is a good yardstick, IMHO, and both he and Yoshikaze bring a lot of fighting spirit that makes them fun to watch) A number of attractive matches tomorrow, in fact. I might have to wake up early to catch these...
Philioyamfugi Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Hokutofuji looked just like Kotoshugiku in his win today. This kid looking really good lots of different techniques
Amamaniac Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Hokutofuji is showing his metal in this tournament. While he didn't have much success against Mitakeumi, he has been strong against his other joi opponents. He fought perfectly against Terunofuji, keeping the latter erect and powerless. Impressive showing for him so far. 1
Fukurou Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Now that Endo's out, I guess Ura is in the joi after all. 1

Correct! It was pretty risky, but the yokozuna knew that he wanted the little guy's mawashi, so he got it.
robnplunder Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Ura keeps marching on. He took revenge on Tochinoshin. Kachikosh is now looking like a real possibility. Takakeisho's learning what it is to be ranked at M1. Ura may join that fate in the next basho. If so, we may see Hak going "C'mon little guy. Show me what you got." Terunofuji looks like he should go kyujo now. Kisenosato isn't too far behind. He hobbled off after today's loss. There were some unexpected, disappointing blow out bouts. I guess after 4 exciting days, an off day (purely my opinion) was to be expected.
autotroph Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Kisenosato had a pronounced limp as he left the arena, I would not be surprised if he leaves us tomorrow. Although, it could have just been a dead leg... What did Terunofuji stand to gain from competing in this basho, after surgery? Did he not want to waste his recent string of good results? Hakuho declining feisty Yoshikaze's offer of a barnstormer lol.
Philioyamfugi Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) Ura was fantastic today..when he slid back into the tawada, reminded me of Hakuho yesterday. GoadedTochinozan into his game... wow Edited July 13, 2017 by Philioyamfugi sp
Kaminariyuki Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Ura - outrageous newbiew prediction: Kinboshi, Nagoya baby. Banzai!!! If he keeps wrestling like this, and doesn't get injured, kachikoshi at M-4 is looking all the more probable... And, at the 1/3 mark, no henkas as yet in this basho. Seemed to me that Tochinoshin clearly knew what Ura was trying to do, but then Ura managed to pull it off anyway, and with nearly perfect execution.
Jakusotsu Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) This is only the second time Aoiyama starts 5-0. Will he do better than four years ago? http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi_basho.aspx?r=11786&b=201305 Edited July 13, 2017 by Jakusotsu 2
Asashosakari Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 It probably won't amount to anything like the yusho, but I don't want to miss the chance of a potential told-you-so moment if it does - makushita veteran Terao has looked very good in his three wins so far, which is impressive given that he's at a fairly high position for his standards. First two match videos at the link, today's is here. And Satoyama's year-long flirt with demotion from juryo seems to be ending with the undesirable outcome this basho... 1
WAKATAKE Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Ura may be on his way to becoming the new Endo as long as he stays injury free. I thought for sure he was in trouble when he got backed up to the tawara, but then he stuck that leg grab in. It's becoming harder to watch Kise and Teru like they are, Kise had Ikioi but fell for that throw. Teru losing the battle of the injured legs to the Geek, who finally gets his first win. Mitakeumi was very impressive in the match between the sekiwake, Tamawashi has yet to pull off a win against him. Hokutofuji couldn't repeat his performance against Harumafuji, instead getting blown out by the yokozuna. Takayasu looked impressive against Takakeisho today while Goeido was able to hold his own against Shodai, although Shodai did have some surprises here and there. As mentioned by Jakusotsu, Aoiyama starts 5-0 in makuuchi for only the second time. Hopefully he doesn't jinx himself this basho.
WAKATAKE Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Kise seems to have injured his left ankle. Whether or not he competes on day 6 will depend upon how he's feeling in the morning according to his shisho. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1854951.html

"It's the left ankle. No damage to the bone, apparently." added Tagonoura Oyakata. ץ

RabidJohn Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) Ura's doing quite a bit better than I expected, and 2 kyujo above him with 2 more looking likely means he's definitely got some top rank opposition to come. If I were superstitious I'd be crossing my fingers and touching wood, but I'm not. I expect the remaining Y/O will deal with him easily, but with Ura you never know! Ura the new Endo? Maybe in terms of popularity, yes, but in sumo terms I'd say Mitakeumi is the one assuming Endo's old mantle; i.e. former collegiate MsTD for whom there are high hopes. From what I've seen Mitakeumi appears to be rapidly gaining in popularity with the crowd too. Ura's not really the new anyone. He's unique and brilliantly entertaining to watch. He's not popular because of expectations, but because of what he is right now. I hope Takakeisho doesn't lose heart along with his loss of momentum. He'll have all the second week to claw it back to something respectable. I know everyone's been going for Kisenosato's left arm and shoulder, but that today from Ikioi was vicious! I don't think they'll be on Kisenosato's case just yet if he goes kyujo. He's obviously still recovering from that very public injury he took back in March, and I'd guess he's still in the honeymoon period as far as public opinion goes. That was another masterclass from Hakuho with the HNH. I liked the way that, even though he managed to stop himself at the tawara, Yoshikaze just accepted it and waited for the inevitable. I also liked how seriously Harumafuji took Hokutofuji. Edited July 13, 2017 by RabidJohn
bettega Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 (edited) Our Kaisei is back on track with a win that pratically stops Gagamaru's ozeki run... best luck to him next time! Now Kaisei only need 4 wins to go back to his right place Kaisei is in pain - right knee, I think. I believe that in good health he would be a contender for makuuchi's yusho (even being in juryo) Edited July 14, 2017 by bettega 2
Tiger Tanaka Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Kisenosato has pulled out of Nagoya citing left ankle injury :( https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1855140.html
bettega Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Well, second kyujo in 3 basho as Yokozuna for a 31y old guy. Not looking good
