A duoboshi? Is that even a thing?

Yeah, that's what you call a second loss.

If Giku loses to Takayasu tomorrow, he will give away a triboshi :)

not as good as a kin-boshi or gin-boshi of course, but still something for a first time makuuchi joi rikishi.

After scoring his first ever dou-boshi today, Chiyoshoma can aim at his first ever kin-boshi tomorroa against the GOAT - and that would be quite a thing!

I've never heard anyone refer to a "douboshi"

Sometimes people use the word "ginboshi" but like in quotes, because it's not a real thing just a made-up idea. But never "douboshi"

Well, douboshi do exist, same as ginboshi. Both are not such a big deals in terms of zabuton being hurled towards the dohyo or some permanent bonus being rewarded to the rikishi, but they are both there, and now you have heard about it. :-)

Some people even track that kind of stuff!

Thanks. Fascinating stuff, isn't it.

The only Japanese usage of "douboshi" I can find in any of my dictionaries means "uterine sisters" -- probably not what you had in mind.

Are you certain it isn't something some gaijin made up?

Anyway, I'll keep looking.

So if you get all 4 of your picks right in Seki-Quad is it a quadboshi?

According to Gernobono it's overextending.

It's a thing but not an "official" thing. It's one of the ways to get points in the TUG game - Maegashira win over Komisubi or Sekiwake is worth 4 bonus points

金星 kinboshi – gold star
銀星 ginboshi – silver star
銅星 dōboshi – bronze star

And of course 白星 shiroboshi and 黒星 kuroboshi meaning white star for a win and black star for a loss.

mitakeumi next ozeki (for me takayasu already made it, only a injury can stop him from getting promoted imo :) ), this basho will be the start of his ozeki run.....mark my words lol

great basho is cooking up here again, im excited........ at most for takayasu, mitakeumi and ura! also i really start to like tamawashi, great forward sumo and he seem to be a nice guy too.......really dissapointing is kotoyuki last bashos, despite his win today i see him in jurio next basho!

Oh, there was some great sumo today.

Highlights for me were Ura working all his strengths against Kagayaki, Chiyoshoma's brilliant defensive win over the Geek, and Takayasu absolutely battering Goeido at the tachi-ai.

I winced when Hakuho landed on his right elbow yesterday, and today it was bandaged up and he was avoiding Yoshikaze's belt... After being so fit for so many years, it's just one injury after another now, isn't it?

Looks like Kakuryu should also have had a practise with Chiyonokuni before the basho. I'm pleased for the latter with his first kinboshi, but Kak should not have fallen for one of his favourite moves.

Re: Mitakeumi's ozeki run. If he were to score 12 wins this time, he would have 33 wins from M1, which is exactly same score as Terunofuji had from M2 to get promotion to ozeki. Difference is, Terunofuji was lucky enough to get straight to sekiwake from an 8-7 at M2, whereas Mitakeumi will have to do it the hard way and force his way up past consistent sanyaku incumbents. However, I do wonder what the feeling would be if he went and won the yusho with a 13 or 14 this time.

Mmmh, would be nice, but won't happen. Sad.

Ura should change his shikona to Unagi. He bends and moves at impossible speed in impossible directions giving his opponents no chance to get a grip on him.

I don't think we will see Hakuho going for the mawashi very often in the future. His elbows are shot too badly. That x-ray was gruesome. If he improves on his tsuki-oshi sumo, he'll be a formidable opponent for some years, given his legs play along.

It's not like it made any difference with Terunofuji as he'd have been sekiwake in the third tournament either way. And as mentioned at the time, Terunofuji was essentially promoted on the strength of two outstanding basho, not his three-basho total. Even if Mitakeumi wins big here he has no comparable record, so it's not like it's a travesty that he can't get promoted this time anyway.

Chiyonokuni and Kakuryu tachiai seemed very strongly head on head, Kak looks somewhat stunned for a couple of seconds, Chiyonokuni screwing his eyes up constantly in post bout interview. I'm guessing that concussion is another health issue that is just swept under the carpet in sumo... Just an observation.

Nice tachi-ai from Takayasu. You think Goeido felt that? I think folks in the parking lot felt that.

Ura showing off his agility, slippery little fellow that he is. That was a fun one.

Congrats to Chiyonokuni on his kinboshi. The basho is not looking good for Kak, who had better rally.

Terunofuji... Well, to be fair, I think Tamawashi can beat anyone on a good day, but this looks like it's going to be another dud basho for Terunofuji. We'll see, though.

And we have Okinoumi trying to exploit Kisenosato's injury. I expect we'll see plenty of that this basho, but he wasn't able to capitalize. I hope Kisenosato is able to compensate, since he clearly does not intend to go kyujo. I wouldn't think any less of him if he did, but you know how these guys are.

Things are warming up already.

What x-ray?

My question exactly.

I remember (IIRC) seeing x-rays of Hakuho's elbows some weeks ago, can't find the thread now. Not so little shards have broken off his bones near the elbow joints.

Endou now 1-1 at maegashira 1 and not looking bad. I wonder whether the "proper shikona on san'yaku debut" deal is on for him still. A san'yaku debut that would come about 3 years later than it was hyped for. Here is a relevant Asashosakari post from the early stages of Endou hype, in February 2014:

"I really do hope Endo becomes at least ozeki, because if he doesn't all this hype will turn out to be the most ridiculous thing in Ozumo in the entire Heisei era."

Injuries are a very cruel thing, and the weight of so many expectations is not much of a stress-reliever.

As you point out, the Kyokai bent it's own 'rules' when they promoted Terunofuji. They've recently bent them again to promote Kisenosato, so who knows? Clearly, if it suits them, they'll do it.

Of course, though, I expect Mitakeumi will have to do it the hard way - and I believe he's perfectly capable of forcing his way up there.

I assume that if you have indeed seen something like that it is highly likely to be someone's idea of a joke based on the fact that Hakuho sometimes used to lead with his elbows to the face of his opponents after the tachi-ai.

It's highly unlikely actual X-rays of a medical examination of anyone - let alone rikishi in Ozumo would be released to the media/general public...

To add on this, I doubt that, if the supposed X-rays were accurate and Hakuhou did have bone shards in his elbow joints, he would be participating in the basho.

By the way your sumo colosseum is an excellent resource and I appreciate your work on it greatly.

It was an Xray shown very briefly in a video containing interview(s) with Hakuho.  I didn't pay much attention to it and did not understand anything that was being said about it.  Nothing particularly gross stuck in my mind about it.  I think it appeared on the forum about a month or so ago.

Time stamped of the x-ray showing a cross-section of Hakuho's elbow with embedded cartilage fragments.   I believe it is blocked in some regions though.
