May YDC soken

The soken was held today, open to the public at the Kkan. Kisenosato was absent due to the injury. "I cannot do any sumo with sekitori," he explained. Hakuhou faced Endou and two others for nine bouts and won them all. Kakuryuu faced Terunofuji and Goueidou and was 8-4 against them. Mitakeumi was absent due to a left hand injury. Takayasu was going at it fiercely. Started off with random bouts against Makuuchi rikishi, then faced Harumafuji for 10 bouts, going 4-6. He immediately followed that with a butsugari session with Hakuhou. "I did some good keiko with the Yokozuna," he said later. "Whatever I did, it became defensive sumo for me, but I found ways to counter his attacks," added Takayasu regarding Harumafuji. The fans were rooting for him loudly. "In summary, I was motivated. I want to return the favor with good results!!" he summed.

8000 fans were present. "Too bad Kisenosato was absent. I guess he still isn't confident. He probably will be training at home for this basho," said Hakkaku rijicho.

Tagonoura Oyakata has come under fire for "forgetting" to notify the Kyokai of Kisenosato's absence from the soken. The bosses are furious. "This is not good. He has to have some notion of what's going on.. It's different from being an Ozeki," said Kasugano, head of PR. The most surprised person in all of this was Kisenosato himself. He spoke last night with the Oyakata and they agreed he should skip the soken. "Since I can't do any sumo against sekitori, I was allowed to rest. I could have gone and done the basic shiko and stuff, but I preferred to try and do sumo against the lower rankers at home. This is unforgivable.." said Kisenosato. After hearing the furor this caused, he was quite surprised. The truth is that the Oyakata just forgot to notify the Kyokai of Kisenosato's absence. He apologized later to the rijicho. "Kisenosato told me he wanted to skip the soken and I should have relayed that to the Kyokai. My bad. It's inexcusable to have caused such bother," summed Tagonoura Oyakata, side burning.

Really, you'd think that given Kisenosato's performance as a shin-yokozuna, and the pretty obvious severity of his injury, no one would have gotten his fundoshi in a twist over this.

I think the point is that it was the YDC soken. Kisenosato is now a Yokozuna, so if he's unavailable there is a protocol of some sort which was not followed, ensuing in a lot of "moushiwakenai"s all around.

And he should have known of the notification protocol (though perhaps not exactly what it entails) just from being around so long. I'm surprised the YDC didn't open fire with both barrels for him not being there, injury or not. No notification makes it worse. But he's still on his honeymoon, so he can get by with stuff for now.

As I wrote yesterday, the Oyakata is the one who is supposed to relay the request, and Tagonoura said he forgot.

Perhaps the sumor world is different (as it usually is), but isn't it on Kisenosato to follow up, to double check with his oyakata that something so important had been taken care of?

I do not think so. He has enough on his mind as it is. These things are exactly what his Oyakata is there for.. Kisenosato said he was totally surprised by this, so I assume he assumed Tagonoura would be doing his job as agreed between them only one night before.

No. If he'd already told his oyakata that he was in no state to appear at the Soken, then it was the oyakata's duty to inform the Kyokai. Simple as that.
