The same hyperbolic style. Does Takanohana II dishonour the rank of a yokozuna in 1999? He barely achieved four KK (two 8 wins, and 9 wins, and eleven wins) and had 36 wins in total that year. But no one would really argue that he dishonours anything. No. The same aplies (at least for me) to Terunofuji. His performances were overshadowed by injuries. So 2016 is no real indicator for his capabilities. I don't understand what point, if any, you're trying to make. Takanohana wasn't up for any promotion, and the only thing that protected him from (more) criticism at the time was the fact that he'd won 20 yusho already - compare that to how quickly the knives came out for Wakanohana. My post was an attempt to explain why Goeido (an admittedly below-average ozeki previously, but no worse than that) was elevated to tsuna candidate more quickly than Terunofuji (an all-time worst ozeki previously) is now. Injuries have zero relevance here. You're at the rank, you're supposed to live up to your billing. If you don't, there are consequences. Terunofuji already avoided the worst-possible consequence - getting demoted - so it's not too much to ask of him to prove that he can actually stay healthy for more than 12 days at a time. There are only so many times people can say "oh, that wasn't the real Terunofuji" (after the 2-13, after the first 4-11, after the second 4-11...) and maintain a straight face, before one is forced to at least consider the possibility that the real Terunofuji is a rikishi who simply can't keep his body together. He wouldn't be the first ozeki to suffer that fate - Tochiazuma was immensely talented but his body also just couldn't handle the rigours of the constant competition. (And it was sordidly ironic that the health reason that eventually forced his intai had absolutely nothing to do with all his previous physical problems...) Anyway, the guys in charge have decided that Terunofuji has to do a little career rehab first, before they're going to shine the tsunatori spotlight on him again, and that's that. IMHO, it's 100% justified. 5
orandashoho Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 I totally agree, Asashoshikari. Wile I am delighted that The Beast came out, Terunofuji has to be a consistent yusho contender before a promotion will be considered.
Churaumi Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 (edited) Goeido had also had a pretty decent record that year, if 2015 Goeido had won hopefully he'd have had similar treatment to Terunofuji. Hopefully it won't take a healthy Terunofu more than three or four good basho to be back in the running. Edited April 9, 2017 by Churaumi Phone swapped Gordon for Goeido.

Kisenosato did a henka in the day 15 match and several people here thought it was okay because of his injury. Using that logic, Terunofuji's henka was justified because he was injured. I would like to point out, I did not like either one of those henkas. Kisenosato's henka was okay in a karmic sense in my book, not because he was injured. Sometimes a henka is called for, like here or when Hakuho pulled a beauty on Kisenosato awhile back after Kise dicked around at the tachiai. Neither guy went for a henka while both were injured and the championship was on the line since they both knew it would be totally out of line, no matter the justifications. There is a time and a place for the henka, and it was not when Terunofuji pulled it out.

His knee was bad enough that he had to go to the hospital. Their is now a thread on the topic of his status for the next tournament. Using your statement, the day 14 henka was the perfect time and place for Terunofuji to use a henka. And once again, I am no fan of the henka. That goes for every henka no matter who uses it.
PawnSums Posted April 11, 2017 Author Posted April 11, 2017 @Otokonoyama, @Jakusotsu, @Randomitsuki? could you take the kise henka talk somewhere else?
