I'm also on the "Ura not going KK" bus, but I'd love to see him try to pull off something big like the tasukizori last basho. A 6-9 record with a surprising kimarite would be my guess.

I'm also hoping to see what Midorifuji and Nishikifuji can do in the sandanme ranks. Those two are joined at the hip!

This is the first time Mita and Sho are at equal level.   Shodai has caught up with Mita.

I don't see Ura going Kachikoshi at this basho.

I think Mitakeumi will do better than Shodai this Basho, but that might just be sympathy ;-)

as for Ura: ditto!

Seems like they threw him in pretty deep for his debut? I don't see it either. Mita and Sho are both probably really gearing up for this, Mita seems to be more solid and consistent.

Ura will either go 5-10 or 10-5 wins. .You never really know with him, I didn't think he was gonna KK immidiadly when he went to Juryo either. Not going to do any accurate predictions because laws of physics rarely apply to him and he seems to be really good friends with all the shimpan.

Makes no real difference to the schedule though whether somebody's ranked M11 or M16.

I hope he goes 10-5 but he may find it tough going in the top division.   In the last basho, he won a lot but some of those bouts were real close.  He could have stayed in juryo if those close ones went the other way.

I guess we'll see what Ura's continued physical growth will do over these next few basho. I'm optimistic and thinking he'll get 8 or 9 wins.

Do you know how deep they threw in Miyabiyama?

As Asashosakari said, it makes no practical difference to whom Ura will face, but he's got a comfy margin to stay in makuuchi with a 7-8 or 6-9 while he's finding his feet. Nishikigi at M16E will face practically all the same guys, but has to KK to stay up.

I don't think Ura will need that margin, though. If he's fit he's well capable of a KK.

Not as deep as Tosanoumi... an ozeki and a yokozuna in his first ever makuuchi bouts. Beat that!

The picture banzuke is available at the online kokugikan shop http://shop.kokugikan.jp/?pid=114619772
Would be nice if they can ship overseas, but I think delivery is only nationwide :/

Some of those expressions are spot on. It's easy to recognise a lot them, even when the pics are small. That Ikioi v Takekaze face-off in the middle is funny to me.

Now how do I read it?

The right side is is the East ranks and the Left is West. Then from inner to outer top to bottom each Rikishi is shown by Rank.

Easy enough. Just get a bunch of people with relationships ranging from brotherly love to barely disguised contempt. Then put them in a room until they agree on a single outcome. For added reality assign them various competing vested interests in that outcome as well as differing opinions on what actually constitutes a good outcome. Give them varying levels of power and influence within the group. Oh and also make sure you don't have any concrete rules.

You should stroll to victory next GTB

So, it's professional cat herding for the win! And here I was thinking that there was some method to the madness. :)

Method? If you get KK you are promoted. If you get MK you are demoted. Usually, in both cases.

Eh? According to Sumo Reference Futabayama's first two bouts in his makuuchi debut in 1932 were, unsurprisingly, against maegashira.

I was saying he was thrown in at a very high rank, Maegashira 4

OK. My "beat that" comment was referring to the rank of his opponents, not his debut rank (which is pretty hard to make historical comparisons as the size of the makuuchi division has varied a lot over the years).

I've been gone for a while. Has anything interesting happened lately?

Kidding,.... kidding....

So now that you have four reasonably relevant (if all are healthy) Yoks running around, I'm guessing that most of the second week will be these guys beating up on each other. IF parity exists (and I'm putting NO money on this, but it's a possibility), and they all go 12-3, there's a good chance that if someone else down the ranks catches fire, they might just sneak through for the yusho with a 13-2. Or not, but it makes for an interesting scenario. (Of course, if it DOES happen, you heard it here first.)

Yeah, I think the chances of a maegashira yusho winner went up a lot. There is going to be serious pressure of Kakuryu and Harumafuji now along with the depletion in the ozeki ranks makes it more likely IMHO.
