orandashoho Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 (edited) Awesome? MWah. A goatee, in my opinion, is a tuft of beard on the chin that is left when all the other facial hair is shaved off. With a little imagination one could call this a ring beard, such as Ishihura has sported, and more a sign of laziness than the careful sculpting and tending that a goatee would take, which is a lot more trouble than normal shaving. Not that I like goatees. In general it's a sign of dandyism, which only few people can pull off successfully. Edited August 3, 2017 by orandashoho

I wear one for one reason--to cover up some minor but visible damage to the area above my upper lip and on my chin caused by an accident. It covers it quite well and I think it happens to look pretty good. Before you start to criticize the motives of others, try to realize that that they may be far different than what you think they may be. In my case, this is not a sign of dandyism or anything like it. It's merely an attempt to look reasonably presentable. 2 1

Even when trying to put in a clumsy disclaimer. Please do not take any offense.

Common usage in the UK would suggest it's a goatee, but whatever you want to call it it's my experience here that such growth is usually a vain attempt to define a chin in an overweight face that's lost all jawline definition - which might also explain its almost universal appearance on those rikishi who choose to grow anything. On the odd occasion I see the thing on the face of a slim young rake, however, I do have to wonder if he's something of a dandy, or even a popinjay. Not that I'm biased against facial hair; I've sported my misleadingly sensible and trustworthy moustache since the late 70s - fashion be buggered! Edited August 4, 2017 by RabidJohn
Katooshu Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 I have chin hair (not quite goatee level) because I like to fondle it while in thought. I didn't realize that people read so much into a little facial hair

I have a double chin as I am too fat for my own good, and the goatee hides it rather well.. and it actually makes me look academic and less dumb. I shall use a new avatar with the goatee-pic taken for PR for a new show a few days ago.. 2
sekitori Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) I thought that we goatee wearers should know the origin of the word "goatee". As you might guess, it refers to the hair on the chin of a male goat. I don't think that's a very flattering description. I would much prefer something classier sounding like "partial beard" or "hirsute chin covering". I agree with something already stated. Having facial hair, especially a beard, gives people the impression that you're smarter than you really are. When people ask me a question about a subject I know little or nothing about (such as sumo for example), I just touch the beard, wait a bit, and come up with something that they accept as being reasonably intelligent. The fact that my answer may be full of crap is not even called into question. It's amazing that a little facial hair can help you get away with saying things that may otherwise sound ridiculous. Kintamayama Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 As they say in Hawaii- "Kam Fong as Chin Hair." (If anyone gets this, I shall be floored.)

On my fishing trips to India in the 90s (where my avatar pic was taken) I was somewhat taken aback at how much respect I was shown. I'd heard Indians were fantastically polite and friendly, but this was something more. It wasn't until years later that I found out Indian policemen are encouraged to grow mustaches, because in India mustachioed men are regarded as being the most trustworthy with a high general approval rating... That's misleading because I found Indian policemen to be the most eminently bribe-able law-enforcement officers I've ever encountered! --- Edit: @rhyen I think you have it. Kam Fong Chun as Chin Hair Kelly (nearly) strikes me a typical Kintamayama pun! @Kintamayama You should not be floored, for there is Google. I'm not old enough to have more than vague memories of the theme tune and "Book him, Danno". @Everybody: Sorry! Edited August 5, 2017 by RabidJohn

Although that phrase ended many of the almost 280 episodes in the twelve seasons of the original series, I believe that it was used only in the first episode or two in the recent series. I guess they thought that it was a trademark associated with the original and they didn't want to continue to use it in the new one. It's interesting to see how this thread has evolved from a sumo provincial tour to facial hair to TV cop shows in Hawaii. I wonder where it will go next. My guess is probably back to provincial sumo tours. Edited August 5, 2017 by sekitori

Don't forget the great English songwriter Nicky Chinn. He co-wrote, with Mike Chapman, "Little Willy", "Ballroom Blitz", "Kiss You All Over" and "Stumblin' In". In other words, some of the greatest songs of the '70's! In the 80's, they wrote "Mickey", "Better Be Good To Me" and "Heart And Soul". Now, back to sumo. Edited August 5, 2017 by Bumpkin

For some reason, that was extremely funny. I thought my friends and I were the only ones laughing but it seems it was an international "thing" and there was even a song written about it.

Kintamayama Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 (edited) Back to the topic at hand. Harumafuji will be joining the Jungyo tomorrow in Tokyo. As for Kisenosato- "We'll see how he is and decide. I think it is important for him to participate in the Jungyo, Still, when there is a time you have no choice but to heal yourself, there is no choice but to heal yourself," explained Tagonoura Oyakata. sekitori Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 (edited) 3 hours ago, Kintamayama said: Simple. You have to heal yourself while you can. There is a biblical saying which states, "Physician, heal thyself". Tagonoura oyakata has apparently adapted it to relate to injuries to arms and ankles of grand champions. It now has become, "Yokozuna, heal thyself". I guess he believes that when one reaches such a lofty rank, miraculous self-cures can actually happen. Edited August 7, 2017 by sekitori
